Reviews for Heat

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5When I started to read Heat, I was expecting a continuation of the overarching plot involving Ulrik, as well as the drama between Usaeil and Con, with a little loving between Nikolai and Esther. Well I got all that and more! There was a definite romance element between Nikolai and Esther but that was more of a natural progression that was based on mutual attraction, not an all-encompassing need to consume each other with a fiery passion. What really got me all sorts of excited about Heat was that secrets were being revealed!I will admit that I did not start the Dark Kings series until a few books ago but I certainly picked up enough to understand that there was quite the rift between Ulrik and the other Dragon Kings. Ulrik has always been painted as the bad Dragon King that was on a mission of destruction but in Heat Nikolai revealed another side to Ulrik that had been spoken of before but not to this level. I will admit that my feelings for the rogue silver dragon have changed a bit and I am hopeful that maybe some bridges that had been burned can possible be repaired somehow. There was a giant reveal concerning Esther and her brother Henry that no one expected. As Esther and Nikolai were in London trying to hunt down some answers to the memories that Esther was missing after the Druid had messed with her mind, they stumbled upon some information that lead Esther to unlocking a mystery within her own mind. The information that was discovered was groundbreaking in the druid world and even though what was revealed seemed impossible to the druids, it was first confirmed through Esther’s brother Henry because he also had a memory that was triggered and later by a druid who could sense truth versus lies. Very exciting stuff! In the world of the Fae there was also a shift, for both light and dark, as there were revelations that brought about confrontations that in some cases were deadly. No matter what, things were never going to be the same in the dark fae kingdom. There were also some changes between Balladyn and Rhi that I did not see coming. Man, I just want Rhi to be happy and for someone to really appreciate her! I don’t know how I feel about Balladyn or these changes. It has definitely made me question Balladyn’s “love” for Rhi and speaking of love for Rhi, I am hoping that maybe a certain Dragon King will wake up and smell the coffee. There was so much taking place in Heat and it was a fantastic read. The pacing was great, the plot and subplots were tied together in a seamless fashion. My feelings on certain characters grew and changed in some cases. I really feel like we are coming to a point where there are going to be lots of answers coming in the next installments in this series and that some long awaited confrontations are going to be taking place. I am thoroughly excited about where this series is going! I will say that the romance between Nikolai and Esther was sweet and Nikolai definitely grabbed my interest with his quiet demeanor, artistic ways, and the desire he exudes for Esther, very sexy. Overall, Heat has inflamed my expectations for what is to come and I cannot wait!!This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I received a free E-galley of Heat from St. Martin's Paperback to review and I am very thankful for the opportunity to read Donna Grant's book. I have not read any of the previous books in the series. It is totally something that I would be interested in reading, and I am definitely adding them to my "need to pick up" list. I will say that this book is very busy and I wouldn't recommend picking it up alone. You can read it as a stand-alone, I did, but you miss a lot of the family connections that you are supposed to be feeling amongst everyone. This is totally a series that you could easily eat up. It reminds me of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, except with dragon kings, druids, and the fae.Without reading the previous books you miss all the intricacies in the relationships. You get a few references to previous events and a few other characters pop up here and there, but you don't feel any connection to them. If you had read the 11 books prior it would totally be different. You would know what Nikolai was like before the book, where it feels like when you start they're already in love with each other. Stuff like that. It isn't bad at all though. This is a great way to get yourself connected to the world and then continue from here on out. I think you would be able to get a good feel for the rest of the stories progression and want to continue.Esther is a fun character in this book. She is haunted by the fact she doesn't remember events in her life since her memory has been erased. That's where you pick up, so you have to piece what's been going on from there. You make this discovery that she is a part of this magical world with Dragon shifters and the fae in more ways than one. Once her issues are resolved the book really comes together in a sweet way. I feel like Esther and Nikolai's connection was a fun and sweet one. After that, I was invested in Esther's character. I liked who she was after everything she has gone through, and I didn't even know half of what she went through because it was written earlier in the series. That just makes me more interested in the series.I went with a 4-star rating because I think whether you have or haven't read the earlier books the characters are interesting and all the different side plots are interesting enough that it felt worthy of a four star.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. Donna Grant is an excellent storyteller. No one was captured in this book but questions were answered and many more were raised. Fantastic series!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Lilly a young women goes back to her home town. She connects with her best friend Tabithia, and her brother. Her brother, Daniel, is tall, raven haired, hunk with glowing blue eyes, and he ride in to the story on his Harley. Oh, if that isn't enough to sell you on him, he has a southern drawl. Sparks fly, she get trapped in his world. He life turns upside down, everything changes. Lots of action, mystery and some really interesting facts are revealed throughout the story.
The flow is a bit jumbled at times, some stark jumps had me trying to figure out where I was in the story. I found myself really enjoying this story and i already bought the next two stories. i love reading new authors, new ideas. I will stick with this author I can't wait to se how she will grow with her craft. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I liked the idea of this book in the beginning. Once I knew that the werewolves could pull the will away from the females, I didn't like it. This book also seemed very dark. I'm not sure I will read the other books. Not impressed.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I'm sorry, but I found this book boring. So boring in fact that even with all that was going on with the story and plot, I had to quit reading it. I simply didn't like anyone in the book! The best friend is a selfish bitch, the heroine is uninteresting, the hero is a jackass. And actually, the only one I was remotely interested in by 60% of the book was the bad guy, and I didn't even like him all that much! So, after 66% I gave up and started a new book.
I feel badly about giving it two stars, the author was really trying to be interesting and unique and create a vibrant world.
But I just wasn't feeling it at all. And when I realized I was pretty disgusted by everyone I finally just gave up on it. I won't be reading anymore from this author. Tepid, irritating, and over-the-top plots and writing. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was a pretty decent novel. It pulled me in from the begging, though there were some slow and/or under developed points, I enjoyed the story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/53.5 Stars for "The Heat"This is my third book by this author, the others being "Hell Bent" & "The Chosen". I think she writes a good story but somehow so far hasn't totally satisfied me but I'm still persevering. I admit to buying her books due to the low price but also based on the reviews. "The Heat" had very, very many 5 star reviews and a few very bad reviews. I ended up somewhere in the middle. I liked the strong characters, the alpha werewolves being their stereotypical arrogant, brutal selves like most of the genre. There were a few new twists and turns to their mythology which was well done. As in the other HKW books I've read, the action scenes are very suspensefully written and the sex steamy. Along with other Amazon reviewers, I wonder why there are so many typos, misplaced words and grammatical problems with Kindle books generally? Why can't they be edited properly? Is this the author's fault? The errors can distract you from the story quite easily. While there are other paranormal romances I've enjoyed more than this one, I will go on to read the rest of the series. It's not as bad as some of the reviewers say and there is certainly something that still attracts me to this author.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Lily's come home to Baton Rouge for the first time in ten years. Almost immediately, she finds herself again lusting after her high school crush. He, of course, has been in love with her the whole time. There's also another guy or two more than just interested in Lily. You never see how the characters feel and think- the author just kind of tells you in a completely dispassionate way. One of many reasons I found this book decidedly disappointing. There's a dozen or two more characters that are completely superfluous and add nothing that just kind of hang out taking up space in the story. Even the main characters come off flat and rather predictably annoying. The plot is repetitive and equally annoying. I've always had a weakness for werewolf stories, but this fell far short. What we find out about werewolves in this story seems rather thrown together rather carelessly. I found myself literally rolling my eyes at the story, and wondering why I was really bothering to finish it.
