About this audiobook
Off Grid and Free follows Ron Melchiore's path to the wilderness, which led him to building an off-grid, sustainable homestead with his wife Johanna. Here you will find true stories of survival, determination, and adventure. Ron's years of experience make this book an essential guide for all audiences wanting to learn more about living off grid and surviving in the wilderness. But more than a guide, Off Grid and Free reveals Ron's candid humor and welcoming style, which will make you feel like you're right there with him along the way.
The book includes Ron's hiking of the 2,100 + mile Appalachian Trail in winter, bicycling from coast to coast, the terror of being surrounded by a wildfire, surprise encounters with bears, and more. For readers with an outdoor spirit, people with an off grid and self-sufficiency bent, and dreamers who want to take an adventure, Ron hopes to inspire others to “take the road less traveled.”
Published in Backhome Magazine, Small Farmer's Journal, and Countryside and Small Stock Journal, Ron and his wife also appear in Life Off Grid, a film and book about people living off grid throughout Canada. Life Off Grid is produced by Phillip Vannini and Jonathan Taggard. See http://lifeoffgrid.ca/ for more information. Life Off Grid aired on British Columbia’s Knowledge Network.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Nice audio book read by folksy writer with many stories of his bush experience. Consider it more an entertaining story than necessarily a how-to guide. I enjoyed it - thanks!

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not bad..starts off better than it finishes..could probably have been shorter to keep the readers interest.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5At first it was interesting then it got boring. I listened at 1.2 speed. Ron's pronunciation of water as "wooder" was driving me crazy..
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Ron is entertaining and has a great breadth of knowledge and experience. This is a good introduction to wild living and outdoors activities.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a truly fantastic book from beginning to end so interesting. Loved listening to all the details just loved it. To be able to hear it is so much better than reading it because you get to visualize what is being described which I’m sure doesn’t match what’s there but in your mind you can visualize and it’s like a super Duper bonus. I truly loved all the adventures that he went through, he and his wife , kudos to them and I wish them well.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5a good book for those interested in wildo living today
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The many tips and just good common sense are a relief to the ordeals of 2020.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Interesting story, but a little too long winded for me. Hats off to Ron and his wife for their success in the wilderness.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really enjoyed his attitude and matter of fact mentality. Ron does not claim his lifestyle superior to others, just wants everyone to know it’s a feasible option ( at least that was my take on it!) a great listen
