About this audiobook

A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer, revealing the mystery behind their infamous breakup.

Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity...until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the '70s. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

Editor's Note

Book club pick…

Since Reese Witherspoon will be a producer on the TV adaptation of this book, it makes sense that she picked it for her March 2019 Hello Sunshine book club pick. On her website, she writes, “The book centers on the meteoric rise of a rock band in the ’70s and its lead singers Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, whose connection is as electric as the music they make together. It’s sex, drugs and rock ’n roll, people!!”

The production was wonderful, all of the actors amazing. Just wish they actually did a version of Honeycomb at the end with vocals

Honestly, Daisy Jones and the Six caught me by surprise with how good it was. But I don't know if I would have liked it as much if I had read it, instead of listening.

Firstly, Daisy Jones and the Six is original. Not the story and plot itself, those are similar to most rock-and-roll band stories we know, real life or fiction. It's the way it's told, through interviews with the members of the band and key people around them. I listened to the audiobook, and it was the best reading experience. It's full cast, so it's like you're actually listening to the members of the band talking to you.

That way, the characters feel like real people. The band feels like it could have been real and, more than once, I wished they were real. I wanted to listen to their songs as I got to know more and more about their story. I still do. That's what I loved the most about the book and why I can't help giving it 5 stars: the characters are real, the story was told but I could see it vividly in my mind. It was like I was listening to a documentary. And I want to watch that documentary, so I'm hoping that movie in the works really comes true!

In conclusion, I reccomend this book if you like stories about bands/musicians, and I definitely reccomend it in audiobook format.

If I’m being honest, I was starting to not like it that much. The story seemed to drag for me and it tended to be boring at parts. However, the last chapter made me do a complete turn around and sold the whole book for me, had me crying. I’m really glad I stuck through it though.

Oh boy, where to begin.... I can honestly say that this book broke my heart while also smiling about it. It takes you on a journey.... from getting to know the characters.... to find out their story...then hate them then understanding them and finally love them and most of all to relate to them. Regarding the complexity of the characters... the way their story makes you feel.... like they’re a part of you.... is just puzzling. Finishing the book felt like being one of the band members...parting ways with your old friends.

Stellar performances by the cast. I listen to a LOT of audio books, and seldom enjoy books with an ensemble cast. Yet this was done so well that it is impossible to imagine it being done any other way. The story is compelling: a rockumentary that manages to avoid becoming cliché, a love triangle that avoids going for a Hollywood ending. It draws enough from the tales of historical bands to bring you into the world of rock and roll, but preserves an originality that keeps the characters feeling real, and almost.... human.

The music is so palpable you can listen to it. The characters are so real. And the ending a solid hit. I expected to be disappointed after Evelyn Hugo. I WAS sorely mistaken.

At first I didn’t think I could get into a first person retrospective about an imaginary band, but the characters become people you genuinely like. Sweet ending and a lot of memorable lines from the story

Five stars for the mention of Linda Ronstadt. Minus 1 star because it took me a while to get into the story. I did love it by the end though. The narration was wonderful and reminded me of the shows we used to watch on vh1 back in the 90s.

That is a well-deserved 5 stars and I am very happy I came across this book. I haven't been so engaged with a story in a while.
The book tells the story of the band The Six and of Daisy Jones, and their collaboration in Daisy Jones & The Six in the late 70s. These bands/artists are fictional - but you quickly forget about this detail. The format is very different, it is like those Entertainment Network band profiles where you here the same story from different people, as members of the band, critics, producers, friends and family, and all together create a mosaic to try to tell the full story from a different perspective.
You can understand what made them so famous (in this fictitious world). You can see how each character only has one piece of the story, but you as a reader can see all sides of the story.
I loved all the characters. They are alive, complex and full of flaws. And the whole book is full of music (fictitious music but I can swear I've heard them) and emotions. It is a roller-coaster full of ups and downs.
The book has its negative points. in my view it is too romantic and I believe that rock stars in real life would be less so. Also, Daisy Jones is this woman who is too gorgeous and with a too-good of a voice that sounds unrealistic, but after a while you forget that too.
I listened to the audiobook version and it took me a while to get into the format, it was too many voices jumping around. But I got used to it and now I can't imagine this book being told in any other way.

My overall rating of the novel is likely 3.5 stars (just didn't do it for me and I could go into more detail, but there's no need here). My rating for the audiobook performance only (I did half recorded half print), was 4 stars. The audio format definitely added to the novel. The biggest issue I had was that I couldn't always tell who was talking.
