Twelve Years a Slave is the true story of Solomon Northup: born a free black man in New York State, and sold into slavery after being tricked in 1841.
Unable to convince anyone he is not a slave, Solomon spent 12 years in bondage, before finally being set free.
Northup’s memoir, recounting details of the slave markets and the harsh life on plantations, was used in the struggle to abolish slavery in the United States.

SOLOMON NORTHUP was born in 1808 and lived as a free man in Saratoga Springs, New York, with his wife and three children until his capture and enslavement in 1841. He was one of very few who were able to regain their freedom after being kidnapped and sold into slavery. After he returned to New York, he published his memoir and became an active abolitionist, lecturing throughout the Northeast about his experiences.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It feels very strange to say I liked a book such as this. Admittedly, it was a huge eye opener into a situation that I'm sure existed, but very clearly wasn't something out of the ordinary. The story was tough to listen to at some points and had drawn tears to my eyes. What these people went through was quite literally hell on earth, and that's putting it very, very mildly. This book is definitely an eye (and heart) opener.
