About this audiobook
A rebellion is growing. The Machinists discover new levers to move the world every day, while the Tensors fight to put them down and preserve the power of the state. Unwilling to continue as a pawn in their mother's twisted schemes, Akeha leaves the Tensorate behind and falls in with the rebels. But every step Akeha takes towards the Machinists is a step away from Mokoya. Can Akeha find peace without shattering the bond they share with their twin?
Editor's Note
Gorgeous language…
The novella unrolls like a beautiful silk thread, starting from when the protagonist was a baby until he is in his 30s. The world-building is subtle — there are supernatural abilities located in “The Slack,” but the magic doesn’t dominate the plot. Instead, it’s the protagonist’s journey to figure out who he is that is the focus. There’s a subtle, lovely romance, gorgeous language underpinning the plot, and a satisfying resolution.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book had ever element that I love in a fantasy book. Interesting world building, queer characters (!), a vicious queen and a struggle for survival... so I listened all the way to the end, but maybe I should have just left it halfway through. The author gave us some great characters but didn't really... do anything with them? The two main relationships in the book literally happened in the span of a page or two. No build up, no chemistry, just dolls smooshing faces basically. We're TOLD that they love each other and would die for each other but we never actually SEE them falling in love or interacting in any deep way. That would be okay if the focus was the political struggle but honestly all of that happened "off screen" too. This author had a really great idea, and they wrote very well in terms of generally nice prose, but there was no heart in it. There was no reason for me to care about any of it at any point. Very disappointing.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow. It's a must read honestly.
The world building was perfect. I love when i can read a sci-fi book and not need to make notes about the science or technology because it's actually explained well enough or imbedded into the world enough that i am not questioning things.
The relationship of the twins, Mokoya and Akeha invoked so much emotion so quickly for me. My sibling is my very best friend and greatest confidant so seeing that dynamic in the book and the loss of that definitely got to me. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The narrator was great but the story itself was sooooo confusing that if you asked me to tell you a summary I wouldn’t know how too
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5An interesting worldbuilding but the book felt rushed and the characters felt distant, time skips didn’t help the case. However I might not have been in a fantasy mood.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely loved this and cannot wait to listen to the other ones in this series. The story is fantastic and the idea of choosing your gender to confirm as is really unique and I absolutely love that idea.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Deep, visceral, heartbreaking- a new world of story telling and fortune. Unapologetically queer. Can’t wait to listen to the next one.
