About this audiobook
Twilight of the Gods was originally written in Swedish, and published in Buenos Aires shortly after the end of WWII. Erik Wallin, a Swedish soldier who volunteered for service with the Waffen-SS, participated in the climactic battles on the Eastern Front during late 1944 and 1945, later telling his story to this book's editor, Thorolf Hillblad.
Wallin served with the Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion, 11th SS-Panzergrenadier Division Nordland, a unit composed mainly of non-German volunteers, including Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes. The division enjoyed a high reputation for its combat capability, and was always at the focal points of the fighting on the Eastern Front in the last year of the war. During this period it saw combat in the Baltic, in Pomerania, on the Oder, and finally in defense of Berlin, where it was destroyed.
Erik Wallin served with his unit in all of these locations, and provides the listener with a fascinating glimpse into these final battles. The book is written with a "no holds barred" approach which will captivate, excite, and maybe even shock the listener-his recollections do not evade the brutality of fighting against the advancing Red Army. Twilight of the Gods is destined to become a classic memoir of the Second World War.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The irony is tremendous. The Nazis are the brave man, the man that sacrifice themselves for higher values, the underdog that fights mechanic armies in avalanches, and armadas of planes and bombs in the skies, and “the enemies don’t fight fair” and crimes committed against them are tremendous!
The success of the first years of the war made them rank themselves as “Gods” but… the wheel of fortune turns both ways! And now – in 44 and 45 – the “gods” are being hard bitten, terrified and shattered, bloody and massacre, suffering horrible wounds, scare of the night, the bullets, the explosions, the cold, the mud, shouting to the winds: if only we had half of what you master! The wheel had turn, and the jaws of war brings defeat day by day by day, and they feel their own unbearable tainted humanity. tainted because they don’t find compassion or feel regret for what they had done, but rather the fragility of their condition and the new turn of the wheel.
The author tries to justify their actions as noble and their position as righteous, he fails in both! They created the monster, the “atrocities” committed against them were more the results of their own actions than anything else. And he fails specially because he tries to clean their own atrocities, of which he knows or presents none!5 people found this helpful
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Exactly what you would expect of a foreign volunteer for the SS. Racist, arrogant, self serving and self justifying propaganda. Avoid.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great book with a well told and informative substance. However for this audio book VERSION, the narrators inflection came off as relatively effeminite and bubbly, which contrasted quite a bit with the violent content. It's very distracting hearing an emotionally charged story of elite SS soldiers fighting to the death for the survival of their beliefs read like a toddler's bedtime story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Solid book. Great action. I just wish the characters were fleshed out more
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was educational to listen to an account of the war from a completely different perspective. I would recommend this audio book to those interested in history that have an open mind.
