About this audiobook

The extraordinary story of Stefania Podgorska, a Polish teenager who chose bravery and humanity by hiding thirteen Jews in her attic during WWII—from #1 New York Times bestselling author Sharon Cameron.

Also includes a recorded conversation with author Sharon Cameron and reader Beata Poźniak, discussing Beata's decades long friendship with Stefania Podgórska and the legacy of the Podgórska sisters.

One knock at the door, and Stefania has a choice to make...

It is 1943, and for four years, sixteen-year-old Stefania has been working for the Diamant family in their grocery store in Przemsyl, Poland, singing her way into their lives and hearts. She has even made a promise to one of their sons, Izio—a betrothal they must keep secret since she is Catholic and the Diamants are Jewish.

But everything changes when the German army invades Przemsyl. The Diamants are forced into the ghetto, and Stefania is alone in an occupied city, the only one left to care for Helena, her six-year-old sister. And then comes the knock at the door. Izio's brother Max has jumped from the train headed to a death camp. Stefania and Helena make the extraordinary decision to hide Max, and eventually twelve more Jews. Then they must wait, every day, for the next knock at the door, the one that will mean death. When the knock finally comes, it is two Nazi officers, requisitioning Stefania's house for the German army.
With two Nazis below, thirteen hidden Jews above, and a little sister by her side, Stefania has one more excruciating choice to make.

Every person should read this book. If you can, listen to the book. The reader is amazing. She brings such authenticity to the story because she is both Polish and knew the main character of the book. I cannot express to you how much I enjoyed this book. You feel the feelings that they felt and you understand what they went through in a completely different way than the stories that we’ve heard from history class. I have read probably at least 50 books on the holocaust and World War II but this one is one of the best. It’s so important for us to remember not only the victims of the holocaust but also the heroes.

What a tale! The last few hours had me not wanting to turn it off! I can't believe the heroism from these sisters, what an inspiration for us all to disregard our differences and be kind humans.

This was a book recommendation from Scribd that I took a chance on. That chance truly paid off. Based on a true story, this book brings 1940s Poland to life and evokes every human emotion. It’s well written and nicely narrated by a polyglot whose lovely accent helps create an authentic sense of place.

An amazing story of an ordinary young woman deciding to risk her life to save others, made all that more powerful because it is heavily based on a true story and mostly the dialogue and small details are the fictional parts. I loved the added interview between the narrator and author at the end of this, as they both had met the real woman this story is about and talk about how much bringing her story to the public meant. Super cool and a moving Holocaust story.

So many details in the beginning I was worried I wouldn’t remember but once I got into in, I couldn’t put it down. A terrifying look into common life during. WWII.

Wow, is really all I can say about this story. I have read many books about this time period (WW 2-Holocaust), but I never get tired of reading the stories of heroes. Ordinary people who risked their lives and put the lives of others first in extraordinary ways. This story kept me up at night. I laughed and cried and wondered ( how is Stefania going to get out of this challenge?) Excellent book. I am grateful to learn about Stefa’s and Helna’s story.

I literally sobbed at the end! A must read! History is doomed to repeat itself if it’s forgotten. This should be mandatory reading for high school students.
