Perfect rom-com…

A perfectly executed rom-com starring a queer, Black teen running for prom queen. Wallflower Liz Lighty is determined to be crowned prom queen and win the $10,000 scholarship prize associated with the honor so she can afford to go to an elite college. The biggest problem? Liz is in love with one of her competitors.

Описание

Liz Lighty has always believed she’s too black, too poor, too awkward to shine in her small, rich, prom-obsessed Midwestern town. But it’s okay—Liz has a plan that will get her out of Campbell, Indiana, forever: attend the uber-elite Pennington College, play in their world-famous orchestra, and become a doctor.

But when the financial aid she was counting on unexpectedly falls through, Liz’s plans come crashing down...until she’s reminded of her school’s scholarship for prom king and queen. There’s nothing Liz wants to do less than endure a gauntlet of social media trolls, catty competitors, and humiliating public events, but despite her devastating fear of the spotlight she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get to Pennington.

The only thing that makes it halfway bearable is the new girl in school, Mack. She’s smart, funny, and just as much of an outsider as Liz. But Mack is also in the running for queen. Will falling for the competition keep Liz from her dreams...or make them come true?

"You Should See Me in a Crown" was a great book, a fluffy YA contemporary, but that talks about serious and important issues. It has a lot of discourse on racism, classism and homophobia, which I enjoyed, but it was also so cute!

I loved Liz Lighty (the main character), the friendships in this book, and her relationship with her grandma made me tear up sometimes (I admit). Her relationship with Mack was also absolutely adorable!

Furthermore, I read it via audiobook and highly recommend it.

Great characters with a refreshingly realistic portrayal of living with anxiety and panic. I enjoyed reading a traditional high school/prom queen/rom com story with a black, queer, and updated twist.

It’s like your typical mean girl story but starring a queer black woman, so it’s much, much better.

    Amazing book all around!
And I need Alaska Jackson to narrate/read more books because her voice is lovely and there is so much emotion in it! The words from the book and the narration made me laugh and cry and go through all the other emotion!

This was a fluffy, contemporary F/F romance about a black girl running for prom queen in order to win a scholarship for college. The story is so well-written and so fun. Liz Lighty is an amazing character who I could relate to, even though it may not seem so at first glance. Definitely worth the read!

TW: queerphobia. I haven't seen anyone post about it so it threw me off at first but it's felt with so well. Also, just an absolutely perfect YA contemporary

Loved everything about this. Liz ? ? ? I adored Jordan’s character too.

This book has everything! Every high school book/TV show/movie mashed up and yet it does everything better by putting a Black, queer girl at its center. I immediately fell in love with Liz Lighty because of her hard-working, compassionate and kind nature that never once comes off as "trying too hard to make the protagonist look good." Everything flows so smoothly, there are no bumps on the road. The writing, the structure, the plot; it all flows so seamlessly. From the awkward first kiss to the final dance, everything is just perfect.

I usually have a hard time finding the romance between two characters believable but this was amazing. I could instantly see why they were attracted to each other. I thoroughly enjoyed this high school prom story, which I had truly believed I was so fine with; but if they are going to be like this one, keep 'em coming.

What a fun read! It had all the good fixings for a light-hearted teen romance. Plus, the added LGBTQ take and family dynamics were so precious. Lots of great moments and an overall sweet story with a beautiful message.
