About this audiobook

Instant New York Times bestseller!
“A remarkable, breathtaking, earthshaking, poetic thrillride.” —Daniel JoOlder, New York Times bestselling author of Shadowshaper

In this riveting, keenly emotional debut fantasy, a Black teen from Houston has her world upended when she learns about her godly ancestry and must save both the human and god worlds. Perfect for fans of Angie Thomas, Tomi Adeyemi, and The Hunger Games!

“Make a way out of no way” is just the way of life for Rue. But when her mother is shot dead on her doorstep, life for her and her younger sister changes forever. Rue’s taken from her neighborhood by the father she never knew, forced to leave her little sister behind, and whisked away to Ghizon—a hidden island of magic wielders.

Rue is the only half-god, half-human there, where leaders protect their magical powers at all costs and thrive on human suffering. Miserable and desperate to see her sister on the anniversary of their mother’s death, Rue breaks Ghizon’s sacred Do Not Leave Law and returns to Houston, only to discover that Black kids are being forced into crime and violence. And her sister, Tasha, is in danger of falling sway to the very forces that claimed their mother’s life.

Worse still, evidence mounts that the evil plaguing East Row is the same one that lurks in Ghizon—an evil that will stop at nothing until it has stolen everything from her and everyone she loves. Rue must embrace her true identity and wield the full magnitude of her ancestors’ power to save her neighborhood before the gods burn it to the ground.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the story and the action. I loved how it painted a story that is laced with real hurt. However I was a little bothered by how the main character treated her friend. There was a lack of patience and empathy in my opinion.

I loooved this story! Was rooting for Rue the entire time. Wings of Ebony was relatable and funny, sad and victorious. Loved it!
Side note: My great grandma’s name was Leola, so having the matriarch of the East Row community with that same name brought back fond memories for me. It really made me smile. Can’t wait to read Ashes of Gold next.

One of the best things I've red in a while, deserve all the praises and prizes it earned.
It should be red in high schools...

Intense, magical and glorious on very important recent themes..
I got goosebumps every time she said" his name was Brian".
Also as not native English speaker the delivery with accent and slang of the hood was delightful for me that I wouldn't understand just reading it on paper.

I just wish we all could take care of the "Fam" as they do.
    Black lives matter.
    Thanks

This was a great social commentary that I’m sure made some readers/listeners a bit uncomfortable - especially as the meaning became less obtuse and it clearly became a commentary on racism and colonialism. I felt myself identifying with many of the sentiments and feelings of the protagonist. I could also understand where a bit more patience might have been warranted with the best friend as her whole world and everything she was taught was turned upside down. But I also completely understood the protagonist reaction to the initial response of her best friend. Good book

Really fantastic! The world building was great, and I loved the focus on family of all kinds. The pacing of the story and the flashbacks were really well done.
