About this audiobook

The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out in this chilling YA psychological thriller and modern take on the classic haunted house story from New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D. Jackson!

Marigold is running from ghosts. The phantoms of her old life keep haunting her, but a move with her newly blended family from their small California beach town to the embattled Midwestern city of Cedarville might be the fresh start she needs. Her mom has accepted a new job with the Sterling Foundation that comes with a free house, one that Mari now has to share with her bratty ten-year-old stepsister, Piper.

The renovated picture-perfect home on Maple Street, sitting between dilapidated houses, surrounded by wary neighbors has its . . . secrets. That’s only half the problem: household items vanish, doors open on their own, lights turn off, shadows walk past rooms, voices can be heard in the walls, and there’s a foul smell seeping through the vents only Mari seems to notice. Worse: Piper keeps talking about a friend who wants Mari gone.

But “running from ghosts” is just a metaphor, right?

As the house closes in, Mari learns that the danger isn’t limited to Maple Street. Cedarville has its secrets, too. And secrets always find their way through the cracks.

Editor's Note

Supernatural and societal horrors…

Supernatural and societal horrors abound when a blended family moves into a renovated, rent-free house in a Detroit-esque town. Everyone in the neighborhood knows the house’s bad rap, but Marigold, who has anxiety and is trying to avoid relapsing into drug abuse, has to learn the hard way about dealing with ghosts. Jackson proves once again why she has become one of YA’s most esteemed voices.

The ending is why I give it 3 stars. The book was ending in the worst way possible. Marigold was suppose to get everyone to see what was really going on.

I don’t know if there are missing chapters at the end or does the book really have that abrupt ending?

edit: I was reading other reviews on gr and it does in fact end like that…

Absolutely breathtaking! I’m read all of Tiffany Jackson’s book, this one is also amazing!!! As always there is that moment in act 3 where everything is flipped on its head and as always she landed the plot flip! This is a really good book and I highly recommend it!

This book had me going! It was well written. The end was good. I wish it had the man getting locked up for lying to the community. It would have been nice for Ms. Sugar and her son to be allowed to live in their home and the community to learn forgiveness.

I really enjoyed the narrator of this book! Made the characters come to life. It's a creepy story in the style of Get Out, but also touches on important themes such as anxiety, addiction, and gentrification.

This story totally pulled me in. I found myself anxiously waiting for what would happen next. That DAMN Miss Suga! This story was crazy! But REALLY good. I'm hoping that it doesn't just end like that and there will be another book because I want to know what happens next!

Excellent read. It will keep you guessing and on your toes to figure out who is doing all the strange things going on in the house and is Mari really seeing things. The only thing that I was not to crazy about was the ending. But I will most certainly tell everyone to read this book.

The horror part was wack, and there was a lot that was just never really explained. Why was she having those nightmares? Logistically how did no one notice what was going on? Also way too much time on the weed plotlines.

This is such a tough review to write, partly because this was probably a 5-star read for me...up until the very end.I think part of the power of this novel comes in the way Jackson tackles a horrific story without focusing on it being a horror story. What do I mean by that? The family feels real, in a tough situation that has nothing to do with the horror, and that situation is given serious attention--it's not just offered as backstory, as happens in so many novels, because we see the very real and almost-constant repercussions as they come across in the family dynamics, interpersonal relations, and, most of all, anxiety. I'm so impressed by the way that Jackson blended all this together, made for believable characters, and wrote anxiety, in particular. All of this was incredibly important, and allowed the book to feel real and timely in a way that most YA Horror simply doesn't.There is probably an argument to be made that Jackson tried to pull too much together in this one novel, and that there was some clutter in the way she tried to make all of it meaningful, from inclusions of family issues to anxiety to drug use/controversy to the local politics and community history--not to mention the actual plot that pulled all this together. For me, though, it worked really well, and I felt like I was being immersed in what a story like this would actually look like, vs. one perfectly formed for fiction. In other words, that clutter and messiness that I know will annoy some readers really worked for me.So, why did this end up being a three-star read for me? The end. And it's hard to say more than that without giving spoilers away, so I think I just have to say that I was very dismayed with how/where the book ended, and I can't understand the choice, to the extent that I closed the book with an out-loud curse and sat there staring at it, wondering if I'd ever pick up another book by the author (which, till maybe two minutes before, hadn't even been a question, I'd been so engaged with the book). So, I don't know. There are some odd choices made with the ending (the very, very, very ending), and while I won't say they ruined the book for me, they worked hard to do it.

4.5- **Would make an excellent movieThis was what I was looking for, something that makes me jump at sounds in the night. It had the just the right level of creepy shadows, what's that sounds, was that a shadow, cold spots and a creepy backstory. It had Poltergeist-ish vibes, creepy house and whole neighborhood. The characters were all unique well developed with issues. Issues ? Yep, the biggest bed bugs. That was the only part of this story I didn't see the need for was the bed bug thing. It felt like it was on every page, every moment was consumed by it. No I don't have this issue not do I understand it. It would be so hard to have a phobia that consuming. Back to the story. Holy shiitake was I on the edge of my seat. The last 1/4 of the book had to be read at one sitting I couldn't put it down. I never saw the end coming.

Trigger Warnings: Mention of Overdose, mentions of drug use, phobia of bedbugsMarigold is moving from their small California beach town to the Midwestern city of Cedarville with her newly blended family. Her mom has accepted a new job with the Sterling Foundation that comes with a free house! With ghosts from her old life, this fresh start is just what the whole family needs. The newly renovated home is the only house on Maple Street, the others are boarded up and falling down. Household items also vanish, doors open on their own, lights turn on and off, shadows walk past rooms, there's a foul smell that keeps making Mari gag... Even worse, her new step sister, Piper, has a new "friend" that keeps talking about wanting Mari gone.As Mari learns more and more about the past of both her new house and town, she quickly learns that "ghosts" aren't the only thing that can haunt you.Once again, Tiffany D. Jackson led me down a road of her book that I thought we were going to, but then quickly yanked me around a corner and changed it up! I always think I have the book figured out but then it gets flipped... I absolutely love that about her books!Jackson's writing style is welcoming (I absolutely loved Marigold's voice) and makes you both root for and dislike the main character... She keeps them very real and doesn't shy away from hard topics. She's also not afraid to have themes of corrupt police, city departments being run from the rich and investors, gentrification, criminalization and ostracism of marijuana users, and the targeting of Black people within these topics.I do wish there was a bit more to the ending, but at the same time, I totally get how/why Jackson ended it where she did. There were a few side character storylines I wanted to know more about.Overall though, I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like a new spooky read to their current TBR list.

This is a decent story, but after I closed the cover, there were several things that made me knock it down a star from my original rating. First, what family moves into the equivalent of a war zone without doing some sort of investigation? Second, after reflection, I found it a bit difficult to believe that four people living in the same house (I'm excluding Piper)weren't able to see/catch two intruders who seemed to come and go quite often. Having said that, it's still an interesting read.
