About this audiobook

""[She] writes with a singular wit, charm, and emotional complexity, every word just right, every page brimming with delicious tension."" — Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of People We Meet on Vacation

International bestseller Mhairi McFarlane delivers a sharp, emotional new novel about a woman who calls off her engagement to ""the perfect man"" and moves in with a charming stranger who makes her question everything about her life, her past, and the secrets she's kept for far too long...

Harriet Hatley is the most in-demand wedding photographer in town, but she doesn’t believe in romance, loathes the idea of marriage, and thinks chocolate fountains are an abomination. Which is why, when her long-time partner proposes, she panics. Suddenly Harriet is single… and living down the hall from her ex. She needs a new apartment, like, yesterday.

Enter Cal Clarke, a hopeless romantic who just experienced his own wedding-related disaster. Harriet and Cal are like chalk and cheese, but as they go from strangers to roommates to friends, it becomes clear they’re both running from something. When Harriet’s most heavily guarded secret comes to light, her world implodes. And Cal, with his witty humor and gentle advice, is a surprising source of calm at the center of the storm.

With her career, friendships, and reputation on the line, Harriet must finally face her past in order to take control of her future. Because if she’s willing to stop playing it safe and risk everything to share her truth, real love and happiness may be waiting on the other side...

I would read mhairi macfarlane’s tomato sauce-stained shopping list so I loved this book. Had a big problem with the narrator though. Lots of mispronounced words. Hyperbole as “hyper-bowl”? Really??

It’s just good! It is everything you want in a book. Great development… in character… In love… In friendship. It has a bit of “what it’s about to happen“ that keeps your attention. And it has amazing characters that you will root for throughout the entire book. I loved listening to the audio version as the narrators were in easy to listen to you. And they also do a great job at adding character to the characters.

This book was as much about surviving manipulative relationships as it was a romance. I loved the friendships and the journey the main character went on much more than the romance but that was nice too. Cannot recommend enough. Great read.

Absolutely loved this one. She writes on emotional abuse and surviving a narcissist so well. I loved watching this story unfold.

I just love Mhairi McFarlane’s books. It would be so easy to dismiss them
as mass market chic lit but they always pack a punch and she handles some deeper subject matter deftly and with keen emotion. Her books are a perfect palette cleanser — supremely enjoyable and delightful.

This book was a tad difficult to read. The emotional abuse that Harriet endured with Scott and Jon and his family. Her friend breaking the girls code. Oy! So much drama. I did enjoy the book and I'm glad for the ending. Mostly women's fiction with a little romance.

Really like the way this author gets into the details of the characters but keeps it focused on the storyline.

O....M.....G! This was quite the book. Took me on a journey. The highs, the lows and in between. The relationships, good and bad. The friendships, good, great and bad. I loved every word! Awesome book

This book is just a really great time. Everything it needs to be and with no shame about it. I laughed out loud, I was angry at the horrible exes, I got ridiculous nervous towards the end and then very excited to see how it all wrapped up.

Oh i loved this, i read just last night first and this one is even better - i don't usually find myself laughing out loud at these but it was hilarious
The only thing I didn't like was that John just turned out to be kind of a "bad guy" when he sounded more like a nice person who just wasn't right for harriet. It would have been okay for him to just have been normal. Everyone was a little "extreme" that way, they were "good" or "bad"

Halfway thru the story a plotline was introduced that I had no interest in. DNF
