- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If the song ‘Material Girl’ was rewritten to be ‘Digital Girl,’ I think that could be the theme song of this book. It’s a story that sometimes makes you ‘glitch’ and sometimes makes you ‘buffer’ but always makes you want to keep reading!
Marie Antoinette is such a well-balanced, fun, thoughtful, and determined character trying to find her place in Franc where she will be queen. Amidst the glitz and glamour on the surface, she’s learning that the life she was prepared for isn’t real.
Louis is the next king of Franc. He’s a smart but shy, reserved tech geek with complicated feelings about romance and the beautiful stranger he just married. Throughout, he seems to somehow be the underdog even as the future king. He’s utterly endearing.
I loved the romance, the insecurities, and the growth of these characters. I loved the social commentary. It was a sweet, fun, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking read.
There is a lot to be said about the role of social media, information security, and technological advances (including android development) which are at the forefront of this very broken society. Is history bound to repeat itself?
Those expecting a retelling that remains faithful to actual historical events OR those expecting a complete departure from those events will be disappointed. This science fiction book exists very happily in the middle.
Note: The audio narration of this book is absolutely fantastic.
