Описание

Delphine remembers a time when she wasn’t the mother figure in her younger sister’s lives. But ever since their mother, Cecile, left seven years ago, eleven year old Delphine has had to step and raise her younger sisters as if they were her own. Cecile left them to move to California, and they haven’t seen her for many years, so when they travel from Brooklyn to Oakland to spend the summer with her their welcome is far from warm.

Cecile is an artist and a printer, and although she is their mother, to Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern she feels more like a stranger. Cecile can’t be bothered with their presence and decides to send them off to a summer camp to keep them out her her hair. The girls were hoping they would spend the summer going to Disneyland, perhaps meeting Tinkerbell, but instead they end up at a camp run by the Black Panthers.

In this humorous breakout novel by Rita Williams-Garcia, three young girls learn more than they could ever have imagined about their family, themselves, and the history of race relations in the United States.
