About this ebook

The film, television, and comedy legend tells the hilarious and moving story of how tough love, and a sense of humor made him the man he is today

By the tender age of five, Bernie Mac had found his calling: making others laugh. He has since become the star and cocreator of Fox’s hit sitcom The Bernie Mac Show; a stand-up legend; and a hit movie star in Head of State and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Now this amazing comedian delves deep down inside to retell the poignant and hilarious story of his childhood and the people who helped shape him into the comedian—and the strong and self-reliant man—he is today.

When young Bernie Mac lost his beloved mother to breast cancer, and faced an astounding number of other hardships, he remembered the “Mac-isms” she taught him: You have to meet all of the challenges, big and small. Because how you start is how you finish. If you want a helping hand, look at the end of your arm. These tough-love lessons gave him an inner strength that led him to choose hope over despair, and to follow his dreams. Maybe You Never Cry Again is a powerful testament to how a mother’s love made everything possible for Bernie Mac by teaching him to believe in himself.

...I couldn't put the book down!!! Anyone looking for pearls of wisdom, and I mean there are some rugged blue mother oysters of wisdom in this one, but 'Maybe You Never Cry Again' will give it to you straighter and realer than a stand-up routine of any length could ever tell. A well put-together memoir from start to finish. The reading is not only rare and raw, but comes from a man with a heart as tender as it was big. The wisdom doesn't lay flat, but rather stands up to the telling of a persuasive entertainer. Told in crisp, jaunting, Bernie Mac fashion it's all in here; the values Bernie placed on becoming a man (stemming from his grandparents, his mother, and even his brother), his marriage & marriage, friends & friendships, his daughter & raising children, and how perspicaciously he modeled these values to steer his career. There is so much in here, and the book at approximately 300 pages is filled with pictures as well. Overall the pacing is smooth and in quite a few spots especially touching. The comedy (true to Bernie Mac form) is fiercely honest, which includes many clips of his performances... some well-known, others less known. And the narration is unfailingly, over the top, all around inspirational. My gosh, can't nothing be more powerful than a man who values family!

After reading this book, I have a lot of respect for Bernie Mac. When I saw the title, I was expecting something entirely different than what I got. What I got was a wonderful autobiography about a guy who really pulled himself up by his bootstraps. What struck me also was how hard working he was and how he put his family first. If you like a good autobiography, like I do, read this, regardless if you're a Bernie Mac fan or not.
