Deadly in Love - Tracey Michelle

    Author

    Prologue

Jessica Max sits at her desk on the top floor of a three-story office building in suburbia in a town, which is just the right size, located on the Jersey Shore. Her thin figure is outlined by the light from the lamp on her desk. She sifts patiently through a stack of papers, and thinks she hears in the distance her front office door open and close. She assumes it’s the cleaning crew.

Refocusing and concentrating again on finding a certain document she misplaced, Jessica once again hears a noise coming from her outer office. She looks up and peers towards her office door. Tonya, is that you? she calls out. She waits a few seconds for an answer, for anyone to answer, but receives no response. With panic starting to set in, she rises from her desk; Jessica is cautious as she walks towards the side of the door. Again, she hopes it is just the cleaning crew trying not to disturb her.

Jessica peers out the open office door. She is relieved to see only a dark empty office. As she walks out into the main office a figure appears in front of her. She almost screams, then realizes she knows who the figure is.

Damn you! she exclaims as she punches him in the chest and regains her composure. You scared me. What the hell were you thinking?

You’re not happy to see me? he asks.

Of course I am, but I wasn’t expecting you, she answers.

Would you like me to leave? he asks.

She smiles and takes a deep breath. I have to meet someone in a few minutes, so now is not a good time. Please excuse me and I promise I’ll call you later, she tells him.

He cocks his head. I’m hurt, Jess.

She closes her eyes briefly and then looks at him. I’m sorry, but you will have to leave.

He smiles at her. In the darkness she can only see the whites of his teeth. A strange feeling comes over her and she takes a step backwards. He grabs her by the throat and pushes her back into her office. She struggles to catch her breath, to grasp what is happening. She grabs a hold of his arm in order to free herself. He throws her to the floor and slams her office door shut.

What the hell is wrong with you?! she screams.

He moves closer to her as she tries to crawl away backwards. Did you really believe you could go back on our deal, Jess?

Jessica’s lower lip begins to tremble as she holds back tears. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

He laughs, and pulls a .22 Caliber hand gun from his waistband. He fires twice, both times striking Jessica in the chest. He places the gun back in his waistband and disappears into the darkness from whence he came.

    Chapter One

The next morning homicide Detectives Verdes and Brown are assigned to the Jessica Max murder case. As they arrive on the scene, dressed in tailored suits – they love to keep up appearances – news camera crews are setting up their equipment on the sidewalk in front of the yellow police crime tape. Both detectives have worked in the homicide division for more than ten years; both are in their mid to late forties. They have been partners for the last eight years.

I am so sick of these leeches beating us to the crime scenes just to try and make a quick buck off someone else’s misery, says Brown, who thinks rather highly of himself even if others think he is just a pompous ass.

Yeah, well, not much we can do about it except try and ignore them, responds Verdes, who tries to be a bit more likeable to the people he comes in contact with.

And put ’em back in line when they step out, says Brown.

They park their unmarked car in front of the building and get out. They walk to the building – with swagger in their step, of course. As they get closer, a police officer lifts the crime scene tape for them to duck under and enter the building.

They walk inside and look around. An officer standing at the elevator waves them over. Detectives Brown and Verdes, over here. We need to go up to the third floor, says the officer.

They meet the officer at the elevator and get off on the third floor. As they walk towards Jessica Max’s office, they take note of the staircase at the end of the hallway and the absence of signs of forced entry.

I have to believe she knew her killer, says Verdes.

Sure does seem that way, replies Brown.

They enter into the office and walk to her office in the back: nothing has been disturbed.

Officer, who found the victim? asks Brown.

The cleaning crew, when they came this morning to clean about 4:30 AM. They said they were running late because of car trouble and wanted to get in this morning before she did, the officer answers.

Was the door closed when they arrived? asks Brown.

Yes, sir. They said it was closed and locked as usual. They have a master key to the building and all of the offices. They didn’t notice anything unusual, and didn’t see her until they went inside to clean her office, the officer responds.

The detectives walk into her office. Her body still lies on the ground, only to be removed once the county coroner has formally examined her. They walk over to take a closer look and see the two bullet wounds to her chest.

With the way those marks are on her wrists and neck, it looks like she had a bit of a struggle going on, says Verdes.

Well, she certainly didn’t win, responds Brown. He’s always so quick to point out the obvious.

As the detectives look around the office, they notice that the stack of papers on the desk are in disarray. Brown yells out, Has anyone been through these papers here on the desk?

The officers in the room respond, No sir, the papers were just like that when I arrived on the scene and I was the first one here.

    Brown nods to the officer.

Do you suppose the killer was after something in that pile? asks Verdes.

I’m not sure, responds Brown. He looks around to find a crime scene technician and waves one over. Collect all those papers for me and have someone in the law division go through them to see if anything stands out, he says. The technician nods and grabs his crime scene case to start collecting and labeling what he places in the evidence bags.

The detectives walk slowly around the office. She had to have known her killer, because there is no evidence of a break in. She wouldn’t be here late at night with the door unlocked unless she was waiting to meet someone says Brown.

That’s exactly what I was thinking: either she left the door unlocked or let the person in herself, responds Verdes.

No footprints, probably no usable fingerprints either, says Brown.

"Let’s see where the emergency door is located and leads to. I’m sure the killer didn’t just
