Prologue
Sexual difficulties in marriage can be a devastating experience. Couples who find that their romantic intimacy isn’t working—for S whatever reason—go through tremendous emotional and relational pain. They wonder if they are really in love, or if they are damaged beyond repair. They start to give up hope that they will ever feel the completion and deep connection that comes with a loving and sexual marriage.
One couple I worked with, Dan and Linda, were almost at the end of their marriage because of a sexual conflict. Though she loved Dan, Linda simply had very little sexual desire for her husband. She never approached him for sexual relations, and whenever he took the initiative, she would either try to avoid it or simply endure the experience. On his part, Dan was extremely hurt and frustrated by this and often felt like giving up on the relationship.
As I got to know the couple, I became aware of a pattern in their relationship that seemed significant. Though he loved Linda, Dan was pretty controlling with her. He told her what to do and called the shots

I knew that this sort of dance between two people often makes one spouse feel like a child and the other a parent. The child
feels helpless and choiceless, and the parent
feels in control and sometimes alone without an adult partner. Neither spouse feels really happy with the child-parent pattern.
I also knew that many problems in sexual unresponsiveness are associated with this pattern. Kids aren’t designed to want to have sex with
