This walkthrough is designed to help you collect every single collectable in Assassin’s Creed II, earn you the vast majority of Achievements/Trophies and, of course, complete the game itself. By the way, turn on subtitles in the main menu and any Italian in the game will be translated for you – rather handy for those of us who only speak one language. Read our Achievement/Trophy Guide to find out how to earn the miscellaneous awards not listed in this guide.

Assassination, Courier, Beat Up and Race side missions can be completed at any point in the game – when you complete the game you can return to the Animus and finish them, so you don’t need to do them all before you complete the story. We also haven’t guided them as they’re all self-explanatory, quick missions.

You can also collect treasure and feathers at any point once districts are unlocked: we haven’t listed treasure as you can buy maps for them, and for feathers we’ve created guides for them as soon as a district is unlocked. Be on the lookout for couriers with red capes randomly inside cities: if you catch and tackle them they’ll give you a great deal of money. The same is true for thieves, who actually show up as red ‘lock’ icons on the mini-map: chase them down for cash.

Alternatively, if you play the game from the beginning the sequences will fit into place. These two sequences are not covered in this guide, however.

    Prologue

The game opens with a recap of Assassin’s Creed and Desmond’s story so far. You begin the game staring at the mysterious writing on the wall that you find at the end of the original Assassin’s Creed. Look around and press a button to continue, after the brief scene follow Lucy to the Animus, watch the next scene and press any button to get on the device. Don’t waste time looking around, just get on.

Watch the scene and follow the prompts to fight for your survival and learn the basic controls. You’ll earn The Birth of an Assassin when you return to Desmond. Follow Lucy through the door ahead (you can now run with R1/RT) and run down the corridor to the left. After the brief scene, follow Lucy through the glass doorway on the right and watch the scene – way to go Veronica Mars! Follow her into the elevator.

When you get to the bottom, follow her out to the right and keep close to Lucy, making sure to run when she does and let go when she gets close to other paths – she’ll stop roughly three times on the way to the next elevator and you’ll be fine as long as you keep close and stop when she does. If you manage to get lost in this room full of Animus machines, well done: you can’t even follow a woman swearing at you.

At the lift press any button to unlock the door. When you get into the car park, you’ll have to fight your way through security guards – punch with the Square/X button and grab/throw with Circle/B but don’t panic: you’ll be ok as long as you just keep fighting back. Lucy will eventually help you out. Once they’re all down, follow her to the car. You’ll earn Arrivederci Abstergo.

After the scene, follow Lucy through the warehouse, up the ramps and listen to her story. Once you’ve listened and had your token embrace, enter the next room to meet a new friend and... Danny Wallace. Hmpf. Move around and talk to Lucy twice and Rebecca once, then have a chat with Danny, sorry, ‘Shaun’. Once you’re all talked out, get onto the Animus and earn Welcome to the Animus 2.0.

    Sequence 1

Welcome to Florence! Time for some street fighting after the scene, so get stuck in and let the game teach you some of the basics of combat: locking on, deflecting attacks and combos when fist-fighting with Vieri de’ Pazzi’s men. After the scene, fight some more and get used to mastering the counterattack – hold down the deflection button and hit punch as an enemy near you starts his attack. These are the devastating moves that make you master of almost every fight in the game.

Watch out for your health though, you only have a few bars of health in the top left to keep you going, but these guys will be pushovers if you’re an AC veteran or you get used to counterattacking quickly. When the fight ends, you’ll need to loot your sore victims to get 200 florins to pay the doctor: just walk over these severely wounded fools and hold Circle/B to loot.

Once you’ve collected 200f, you can loot more if you want, but you need to follow Federico, who is marked by the ‘!’ on your minimap. Talk to him and follow him down the street to the North, and over the boxes, across the beams and up the building at the end (if you’ve forgotten how to freerun, its R1 and X or RT and A). Follow him over the rooftop and down to the ground on the other side to meet the doctor.

After you’re patched up, Federico challenges you to a race to the top of the church – but he’ll take an indirect route, so use your free running to climb up the ledges on its front up and climb onto roof, and into the glowing circle before your brother to win. Follow Federico up the tower after the scene.

Walk onto the little perch and Synchronise to clear your map up a little, then perform a leap of faith into the hay below. Wait inside for Vieri to arrive and run off, before leaving. Vieri’s men will be marked by red dots on your minimap, so try and avoid them, but you can fight or flee them as necessary. Get up over the rooftops to get to the marker and down to the ground, but enter the little area to the west here to find a chest with some extra florins. Enter the glowing circle.

After the scene, climb up the wall ahead to get to her window and interact for some Italian Passion. When the morning comes, ahem, use your free running to escape the guards – use bales of hay, rooftops and any hidey-hole you can find to avoid them. Just remember, you can’t hide effectively while you’re in their direct line of sight. Once you’re free, head towards he next ‘!’ objective.

Talk to your father, Giovanni. Accept his mission and turn right, where you’ll find a chest containing extra florins. You can also read/listen to the letter in Database/Documents. Climb up to the building’s rooftop and open your map – we’re going for a viewpoint before completing the mission, the one North East of your current position.

Head over the rooftops towards the marker and you should spot that it’s a large white tower: you need to climb up the Santa Maria Del Fiore church behind it and then jump over onto the tower’s North Side, then climb up to the open window on the East side. In here you’ll find two chests with florins in: one up here and one if you climb down carefully to the bottom. Climb back up and out of the window, and continue climbing up over covered windows and eventually onto the roof. Head out onto the perch, Synchronise and leap of faith into the hay below to earn High Dive.

Now set your marker for another landmark to the South East of here, and make your way to the Palazzo Della Signoria tower: make your way up the building below it from the Northern side and quickly beat up the guard at the base of the tower (and scavenge his florins). Climb up to the top, head onto the perch to Synchronise and dive into the hay below.

Now set your marker for viewpoint just South of the objective. Head towards it over the rooftops and climb this simple tower, synchronise and dive down, before heading to the objective itself and talking to the target. Now speak to the nearby Tailor and Blacksmith for database files. Now set your marker for the Southern viewpoint, which is West of your position, and use the rooftops to head over there (avoiding or fighting the red-dot guards).

Climb, synchronise and dive down from this tower, now mark the next viewpoint to the Northwest. It’s another simple little tower so sync and dive, before marking and heading for the final viewpoint in this district, to the Northeast. This tower is also a simple affair, so sync and dive, and head back to your actual objective now. Talk with your brother and knock on the door.

After the scene, you’ll unlock some side missions. Go talk to Claudia, Ezio’s sister, on the nearby bench. Accept her quest.

    Beat a Cheat

Follow the marker to go meet up with Duccio. During the scene, follow the onscreen prompts to punch him, then beat him up and grab him, and use some the other face buttons to lay into Duccio until he’s had enough. Mission accomplished. Head back to the family home and talk to your mother inside your house.

    Friend of the Family

Follow her and listen to the conversation to meet Leonardo da Vinci. Pick up the box and walk back to the objective/your house with it (the two of them will follow you). Put the box down in the glowing circle to complete the mission. Head outside and talk to your little brother, Petruccio.

    Petruccio’s Secret

You need to collect the three feathers marked on your map and bring them back for Petruccio: climb up the building to catch the nearest feather in the glowing circle, then take the rooftop route West for the other two. Make sure you look out for a little balcony on the left just before the second one to find a chest to loot more florins. Collecting all three feathers, florins and returning to the door will only cause the most inept of free runners trouble.

Now the 100 feather locations in the game are unlocked: these are very important for upgrades and awards, so now we’re going to collect all of them found in this, the San Giovanni district. If you’re not bothered about them, just ignore these next paragraphs.

Feathers in San Giovanni District, Florence

9 Feathers, bringing total to 9/100

1/100 – On your map, look West of your current position and you’ll find a circular looking structure with a Tailor to the South. On the North East side just above the dark grey rectangle is the first feather: get onto the rooftop here and it’s perched on top of the wooden crane.

2/100 – On your map, look North from 1 and find the dark grey rectangle North of the Blacksmith/Fast Travel location. Head over there and you’ll be able to spot this feather in a window just below the roof.

3/100 – On your map, look East to the church. Head over and climb up it and head to its Eastern side, and make your way up the huge dome via the Western side. You’ll find a few treasures to loot, before climbing up towards to the cross at the top where you’ll collect the feather. Be careful getting back down.

4/100 – On your map, look South East from your position at the church and mark the Eastern side of the Palazzo Della Signoria. Head over there and you’ll find it on the lower rooftop balancing on a beam to the East (listen out for the twinkling sound that gives away its position).

5/100 – On your map, look to the South and mark the Tailor shop near the city exit. Head over there and climb to the rooftops of the buildings South of the tailor, and head East a tiny amount, but look over the South side: the feather is balancing on a beam just over the edge.

6/100 – On your map, look West of feather 5 to the city exit: climb back onto the rooftops from the perch and head West and look to the Eastern side by the water below: the feather is again perched on a beam, so you’ll have to carefully climb down the buildings around it to collect it.

7/100 – Climb back up to the rooftops and head to the North Western edge of this dark grey exit area: there’s a little light grey section to the West with a bit jutting out to the North. On the chimney stack of the building this represents you’ll find the feather (if you can’t find it, look South of the Blacksmith/Doctor and one of the rooftops will have the feather).

8/100 – On your map, head to the lone blacksmith exactly West of feather 7. Head over to the tower to the South West and the feather is a level below the tower to the West, in a window.

9/100 – The final feather in this district, head directly North from your current position onto the houses opposite, climb up to the roof and the feather is in plain view on top of a wooden crane like the first feather.

Now there are a few extra missions to perform here, so we’ll go through what you have to do for them now quickly – some of these missions are straightforward and we won’t bother with too much detail. We’ll start with the BEAT UP EVENT West of the Auditore homestead.

    A Woman Scorned

Follow the marker to a little courtyard, and identify the cheating husband with Eagle Vision. You can also grab treasure from the courtyard here. Beat on him until he gives up and you’ll earn Macho Man. Now, head to the COURIER ASSIGNMENT marked South West of the Auditore homestead.

    Casanova

A race to deliver two letters: a simple enough task, just deliver the letters before your 4 minutes run out. You can also read the letters in Database/Documents/Letters. Watch out for the guards around the targets, and keep to the rooftops to avoid the guards looking for you, and you can’t give them letters while they hunt you.

Now on your map select the Race to the East, North of the Palazzo Della Signoria.

    Florentine Sprint

A simple 14-point race across rooftops. Keep your free running going, pay attention to where the next marker is and try not to stop or lose too much time if your control goes a bit funny and Ezio jumps in the wrong direction (which he will every now and then). When you win, you’ll earn Steal Home.

These missions are designed to give you a taste of the side quests available in Assassin’s Creed II. We won’t be guiding the rest of them, but you should now have a basic idea of what they entail: they’re simple, self-explanatory quests that will give you some extra cash. Now, there’s one more important quest: the Codex Page, South West of the Palazzo Della Signoria.

To acquire this requires a good fight: at least for now it does. Later on in the game you can use courtesans, mercenaries or thieves to distract guards rather than attacking them yourself. For now, you need to beat them up/kill the guards, and then head inside to loot the glowing chest for the Codex Page. All 30 Codex Pages are required for the endgame, so whenever you see the icon you should make sure to collect them.

Now, make your way back to the Auditore homestead and interact with the door for the next mission.

    Special Delivery

Three objects to collect now. Head for the South marker first to deliver the first letter, then North East to deliver another on a rooftop and North East from here to reach the pigeon coop on the rooftop and interact with the door. Use the contextual camera to complete the mission. Head back to the objective, or to an Art Merchant to buy a map with Treasure locations. Spend some time getting rich if you want: we won’t list where they are as the game does that for you. When you’re done, head to the objective.

    Jailbird

Watch for the interaction in the cut-scene. Climb up to the roof and head East towards the Palazzo della Signoria. You’ll get a tooltip tutorial on your notoriety along the way. Climb the tower from the Eastern side, and deal with any guards you meet quickly. Climb up the tower to reach your father. Make your way back to the Auditore homestead and go inside.

    Family Heirloom

Turn on Eagle Vision to find the secret room to your left. Interact with it and open the chest. You’re decked out in proper assassin gear now, and you’ve got a sword finally: make sure you have it selected but not equipped. Exit the house and lock on to the guards, and teach them the Auditore’s are nothing to be messed with, thanks to your mad skills. Head up onto the rooftops and head for your new objective, Uberto Alberti’s house. How ridiculously positive and not remotely ominous is this cut-scene? Make your way to the next objective marker.

    Last Man Standing

Head up the nearby steps to watch the scene. Oh dear. Don’t try and take the guards on, just flee: climb up to the rooftops as fast as you can, just keep running and trying to hide from the guards chasing you. As soon as you’ve avoided them, the Sequence is complete and you’ll earn The Pain of Betrayal.

    Sequence 2

The next area is to the North East in the next territory, San Marco. Make your way there and do your best to avoid guards and don’t take to the rooftops until you’re well past the Auditore homestead. Climb the tower just South of the objective first to tick off another viewpoint and open up the San Marco map before heading to Annetta’s marker.

    Fitting In

Now to learn about blending: walk into the crowd of girls to learn how to mix in with a crowd of people. Mix with one of the groups ahead and note the white markings on the floor you need to keep to in order to blend. Follow Paola outside and keep inside a group of moving civilians to blend in. Follow her around until you get back inside the garden you started in.

Now you need to learn how to steal, by running into people five times and fleeing from them. It’s a much simpler and quicker system than in the original game. Once you’ve nabbed cash five times, return to Paola to finish the mission.

    Ace Up My Sleeve

Now you need to go and meet Leonardo da Vinci again, so follow the marker back into the San Giovanni district to get to his house. This won’t be particularly easy though, so once you get back into the district start using your blend skills to get close to his house – hiring courtesans will give you chance to distract guards too. Rooftops are another way to get close but be warned: there are archers about and you don’t have a weapon yet.

When you meet up with him, you’ll receive the hidden blade from that ‘joker’ Leonardo. He will go outside with the guard and take a kicking, so it’s the perfect time for you to test out your new blade: have it selected, sneak up on the bastard and end him. Pick up the corpse and follow Leonardo back into his workshop, and place the body in the glowing circle.

Make your way back to Paola’s (the next waypoint) over the rooftops and try to take out archers quickly from behind, or use courtesans to sneak by guards. When you get to the location, climb up the building and look for the symbol on the rooftop that Shaun mentioned: it’s on the South-facing side at the top. Turn on your Eagle Vision for a few seconds when near it and wait for the talking to stop. You’ll unlock Tip of the Iceberg.

    IN THE BEGINNING

Time for your first puzzle, 1/20. There are ten paintings here, five of which have something in common. The word ‘CORE’ in red is the clue: fruit! Use the Zoom button to get a close-up of the images to get a look and spot which feature characters holding fruit. It’s pretty easy to work out, but if you don’t want to be bothered, just enter the following:

    3 - The Fall

5 - Hercules in the Garden of the Hesperides

    6 - Atalanta and Hippomenes

    7 - Judgement of Paris

9 - Idun and the Apples

It doesn’t matter what order you enter them. You’ll earn A Piece of the Puzzle and complete Puzzle 1/20 to get the first part of Database/The Truth. Get back down to the ground level and start the next mission.

    Judge, Jury, Executioner

Make your way South to the marked building and stand in the glowing circle on the roof to watch a scene. Look left for to spot three archers on the roof of the Santa Croce and a glyph in the background: you need to get up there for the glyph. From this roof, dive down into the hay and make your way to the front of this large building and when no guards are looking, climb up this side of it to get up above and behind the archers.

Quietly drop down and take out all three in low profile: they shouldn’t realise you’re wiping them out one by one. Empty their pockets and scan the glyph at close range to start Puzzle 2/20.

    SIXTY FOUR SQUARES

You need to rotate the images bit by bit in order to line them up: they’re not even remotely challenging, just remember left and right to turn and up and down to select which part to turn. Once all three images are aligned, Puzzle 2/20 is solved.

Now back to the mission: get back down to the ground and blend with a group to get around the building. Being spotted fails the mission, so stay close to a group until you find the courtesan’s on the South side: half the group will auto distract the first set of guards, and you can use the others to distract the guards by the entrance to the gardens on this side.

Get in a group either going inside or quickly get into one inside and locate Uberto: get closer and he’ll eventually spot you but just rush up to him and let the fat son of a bitch taste retractable assassin blade metal. Quickly get up onto the rooftop and flee the area: run fast and make sensible jumps across rooftops to get out of the guard’s ‘area of effect’ vision and take cover. If you climb up to the very top of this building, you’ll find Feather 10/100 just over the edge of the North Side roof on the Western side (we’ll recap this during the feather hunt later).

Once you’re out of harm’s way, make your way back to the next objective back at Paola’s and start the next mission.

    Laying Low

You can now get rid of your Notorious status by removing posters, bribing heralds and assassinating officials. You’ll have a few new markers on your map, and you need to perform enough actions to bring your notoriety down to incognito. It’s up to you how you do them, but remember to watch out for guards, assassinate targets away from large public gatherings and try not to inflame the situation by going stab happy. Once you’ve got your notoriety down, you’re a little freer to walk around the city.

Now you’re no longer as wanted a man, it’s time to map out this district with landmarks! Choose the North Western viewpoint first, head over and you’ll find it’s a fairly basic tower: head North of it first and on a beam sticking out to the East a few rooftops away you’ll find Feather 11/100. We’ll recap this one soon to make sure you’ve got them all. Climb the tower, synchronise and dive off.

Now head for the Northern viewpoint, which is to the East of your current position. You’ll be warned of a glyph nearby, but for now climb the tower and synchronise, and if you’ve done all of the towers so far you’ll earn I like the view. Dive off and head for the large, dark grey building (the Ospedale Degli Innocenti), and you’ll find it on one of the little rooftops rooms on the East side, facing North. Scan it to begin the next puzzle, Puzzle 3/20.

    DESCENDANTS

Turn on infrared and find where the Apple is hiding in the images. The first one is on the table, just below the guy sitting down with the bow-tie’s outstretched arm. In the second image, it’s below and to the right of the upside-down Houdini’s head. In the third image, it’s in the middle of Ghandi’s right arm (your left). Puzzle 3/20 is solved.

Now target the landmark South of here, which is another simple tower to scale, synchronise and dive off. Now head South for the next tower and you’ll find yourself on the Santa Croce again. This tower is, again, fairly simple to climb up and synchronise. Dive off and set your marker for the final viewpoint in this area to the South West, which will be your 13th viewpoint so far. Climb up it and do your thing.

Feathers in San Marco District, Florence

9 Feathers, bringing total to 18/100

10/100 – Previously mentioned, this is found on part of the roof of the Santa Croce, which is the large dark grey building in the south portion of the district. The feather is hanging off the North side of the roof on the Western edge.

11/100 – Previously mentioned, this is found North of the North Western viewpoint, on a beam facing East (for reference, it is also South of the Western Fast Travel Station at the top of the San Marco district).

12/100 – Open your map and locate the Southern tailor here in San Marco. On a pole above his stall you’ll find his feather.

13/100 – Open your map and head directly East from the Southern tailor where you collected 12. When you get to the last building by the park here you’ll find it on the side of one of the crumbling buildings on a beam.

14/100 – Open your map and head West from the Santa Croce where you got feather 10. On the border with San Giovanni you should be able to find this feather on top of a wooden crane opposite the Palazzo Della Signoria.

15/100 – On your map, head to the Tailor/Blacksmith North of the Santa Croce. The feather is on top of wooden frames on the ruined building directly South of the shops, above the little courtyard here.

16/100 – On your map, set yourself a target for the Ospedale Degli Innocenti (big dark grey structure in the top right of the San Marco district). Get down to the ground level and approach the Northern part of the Western side and you’ll find this feather above a door. This can be a tough one to grab, but the easiest way is to the rebound off one of the external pillars to grab onto a little ledge next to the door, then leap left across the face of the door with the feather to collect it.

17/100 – A tricky one to pinpoint, this. Head West from 16 towards the Western dark grey building, and get to the little tower you dive from to get a viewpoint and where you were able to get feather 11 from. Look South East from the base of the tower on the rooftop and keep going in this direction and you’ll find this feather balanced on a little wooden scaffold on top of a ruined rooftop.

18/100 – The final feather in this district, open your map and head over to the dark grey building in the West (the Palazzo Medici), and from here head directly South to the light grey square surrounded by white (it’s a little courtyard). The feather is in a window overlooking the courtyard below.

Now there are a couple of extra missions left in San Marco. Directly North after collecting feather 18 is another Codex Page, so head to it and use the thieves on the nearby rooftop to lure away the guards by the doorway. Sneak inside and nab it, and there’s another one elsewhere in the city. Get yourself to an Art Dealer nearby and you can get a map for all San Marco’s treasures. Do any side quests, collection and restock your ammo/health and lower your notoriety before heading to the objective to start this Sequence’s final mission.

    Arrivederci

If you made sure you were incognito before starting this mission, it will be a cakewalk. Walk carefully and slowly to your destination: don’t attack anyone, run into people or anything violent: just walk. Ignore your impulses to murder the bards that get in your way. Eventually when they get in the way too much you can use the Weapon Wheel to select throw florins to distract people and bards: chuck a little gold to get them to leave you alone.

Once you’ve reached your first target, head on towards the next one and towards the city exit. When you get close, notice that the exit is blocked by lots of guards: hire one of the courtesan groups and use them to distract the guards. Slip past while they’re distracted to the waypoint outside, and continue to follow the waypoints until the sequence completes and you earn Vengeance

    Sequence 3

    Roadside Assistance

Follow the road until you bump into an old enemy: use your hidden blade to protect Ezio’s mother and sister. You’ll get a sword after the next scene, so use it to make short work of Vieri’s men. Really, Ubisoft, does Mario have to say that during the next cut-scene? Sigh. Head forward after the scene and talk with Mario again.

    Casa Dolce Casa

For this mission follow Mario and listen to the dialogue. When you reach the ‘family villa’, you’ll be given some money and told to go into town. Set your target for the nearby viewpoint, however, and climb up the villa to synchronise your view of Monteriggioni (14/66 viewpoints).

Get back down and get to the West side of the South facing side of the Auditore Villa. Here you’ll find a glyph you can scan just below the roof to start Puzzle 4/20.

    INFINITE KNOWLEDGE

Another ‘find the object in the image’ puzzle. In the first image it’s in the barrel of the bazooka the soldier is carrying on his back. In the second it’s on the white helmet of the soldier in the background by the low wall. In the third, focus on the officer’s on the right and just above the soldiers behind them is the next image, around their rifles near the right tree. In the final image, it’s the yellow burning object in the hand of one of the monsters on the right. Puzzle 4/20 done.

Now to hunt for the 8 Statues here in Monteriggioni. Go West from the corner of the Villa where you found the glyph to the city wall, and go South: at the first house here on the West wall you should be able to find Statue 1 – Venus. Jump onto the building South of this one and go East: over the East side is Statue 2 – Mars.

Continue East down and over the combat arena and on to the Eastern side and up to the higher level again and you should be able to find Statue 3 – Pluto, pretty much parallel to Mars. Jump over onto the building South of this one and off the Southern side you’ll find Statue 4 – Neptune on the wall by a tree. Move to the building to the East and then the building South and off the Eastern side to get Statue 5 – Jupiter (you should be able to spot a treasure to the East as well from here).

You’re on top of a church now: head to the Western side and look West: the next statue is on the side of a building ahead. Get over there and collect it to pick up Statue 6 – Minerva. Head over to the Doctor’s to the West and get up onto the roof: Statue 7 – Diana is directly above and behind the Doctor. Now head over to the final building to the West of this one and you’ll find Statue 8 – Apollo on the East side. You’ll earn Myth Maker.

Now, head back up to the Villa and around the West, North and East sides you can place these statues back in their pedestals for a grand total of 8000 florins! Now aren’t you glad you bothered? With this newfound wealth, head down into town and step up to the Blacksmith. Repair any damage, and make sure you give treat yourself to new stuff. Now head to the Doctors office to the South and buy any medicine you need.

Head back up to the villa for the next objective. After this, head into the Codex room and talk with Mario again.

    Practice Makes Perfect

Target practice now, Lock onto the enemy and learn to dodge away from enemies with the strafe button, just as enemies attack you. Now you need to counter-attack three times by holding the deflect button while locked on and pressing attack as the enemy starts their attack. Now you have to Taunt and avoid three times. Finally you need to learn how to escape from a fight: a useful skill. Now you just need to spar with Mario to complete your training.

Head back inside the Villa and talk to the guy in the Codex room. Go upstairs and talk to your sister, and find out that you can place the feathers you collect into the box in this room. Place your 18 in there now. Leave the Villa and head South – the Blacksmith has a few new supplies if you fancy them. Head out of the city and get on a horse and head South and East to follow the road to Tuscany – San Gimignano.

Now head North for the viewpoint in this area: ignore the objective as you need to see
