After years spent living in the United States, Jane returns to the Scottish estate of Elvie, where she had spent a magical childhood. Memories of a lifetime spent at Elvie had always summoned the image of Sinclair to Jane's mind. Sinclair was the rakish man Jane had once dreamed of marrying, but now that she is home, she finds Sinclair to be an entirely different man from the one she had known. His enticing charm now has a purpose, and Jane can no longer trust him...or herself.I enjoyed this book quite a bit. In my opinion, it was a very easy and pleasant read for me. I didn't think that this was a particularly earth-shattering story, but overall I gave The End of Summer by Rosamunde Pilcher an A!

A nice story - Pilcher always creates such characters that you end up caring for. One of her small novels.Back Cover Blurb:Sitting on a California beach at summer's end, Jane Marsh thinks back to her childhood at the estate called Elvie in a remote corner of Scotland. She remembers not only the heather-covered hills and the lonesome loch, but her grandmother....and, of course, Sinclair. She has secretly dreamed of marrying rakishly handsome Sinclair and settling at Elvie forever. Then an urgent visit from her grandmother's lawyer becomes the catalyst for her return to Scotland....where waiting for her is passion, not gentle love, and the chilling realisation that she may be ready to wed the wrong man.

This book is signature Rosamunde Pilcher. She lays out a beautiful scene to the reader so that you feel like you are there. She tells you just enough about each character to start while leaving you wanting more and as the book unfolds she trickles information a little at a time. It keeps you turning the pages and delving into the lives that she creates. This is one of my favorite authors, so I may be a bit bias. This book is short and a good, rainy day read at only 118 pages long. This books looks in on the life of Jane Marsh who believed she knew her extended family, but after many years living with her Father in California she is called back to her Maternal Grandmother's home , Elvie, in Scotland. There she finds the family she thought she knew so well, is not always what you see on the surface. She slowly comes to grips with the personal struggles and moral pitfalls of her family members. With the support of an unlikely person she finds love and the ability to forgive others shortcomings.
