    Bodyguards - Michael J. Franklin

    Introduction to A.T.I.S.

What exactly is A.T.I.S.? It’s an acronym which stands for the four main security requirements and measures that should be addressed when planning or attending any event where VIPs are in attendance and real need for personal protection is required. A.T.I.S. means:

    A – Agenda – The program

T – Types of possible intruders

I – Interaction of the protected participants

S – Security measures to protect the event - bodyguards

If you follow these guidelines and steps in your security planning and event organisation, the outcome will be successful.

In Close Protection and bodyguarding there is only one dumb question… and that question is the one that you don’t ask and that you ultimately won’t have the answer for!

Have you ever been at an event as a guest, as part of a comprehensive security service to a VIP or actually providing bodyguarding services to some famous person and had asked yourself the question:

What would I do if…? And you didn’t have an answer?

Well, you aren’t alone. In the beginning of my career I often asked that question. During regular operational briefings I found myself paying more and more attention to the details and trying to understand how all the security plans fit together and discovered that there were in many cases wonderful plans in place, but very few understood or paid any attention to them…being only interested in their own Bosses.

We were no different from the other teams and no matter what event we attended we were only concerned with our Bosses and were often oblivious to the plans of the other CP teams that were present. Naturally, we were polite, co-operative and professional. But our plans didn’t take into account that there might be an overall plan for the event.

It was during one of these high level events that a gun-totting Emotionally Deranged Person (EDP) highlighted to me that in order to become a truly professional bodyguard I needed to understand the complete event security plan and how it affected my Boss, my team, the other teams and of course, myself. I wanted to know what everyone else was going to do and who was responsible for what and in which area?

Remember the motto of the Boy Scouts: Be prepared!

High profile events where there are many VIPs there are also going to be people present carrying guns and various other defensive weapons, when things go wrong, they can go horribly wrong and that very quickly.
