    The protagonists in the play hide themselves behind fictitious personae. It is done with a purpose of escaping from burdensome social obligations. This farcical comedy takes the art of comedy to new heights and proves that comedy is not only for the purpose of making people laugh.

    Triviality is the major theme of the play. The play treats the Victorians ways satirically and it ridicules the institution of marriage.

    Some of the contemporary critics said that the play lacks social messages but some other praised the play’s humour. Many reviewers were unanimous in declaring that this play was the culmination of Oscar Wilde’s artistic career so far. On account of its high farce and intelligent dialogue, The Importance of Being Earnest proved to be most enduringly popular play. The popularity of the play is not limited to theatres, it is prescribed in the course of study in most of the colleges in America and many other parts of the world. The students of literature are taught its literary value from various angles.
