    Chapter 1

There they were out in the frigid February snow, fighting as if their lives depended on it. It was not just a test of skills and wit. It also required strength and agility.

It was a battle that had been going on since time began: Boys versus Girls. Gilbert and Perry against Anne and Diana. They had each built magnificent white forts, one on either side of the road.

It was the winter vacation that Anne, Diana, Perry and Gilbert spent a lot of time together. The boys made a low, squat igloo-style bunker with small windows running along the wall. It looked like a giant hamburger, the windows along the perimeter of the patty. But could this hamburger stand up against King Arthur’s tall and elegant castle, complete with flag flapping in the biting-cold wind?

The girls placed snowballs in pyramids along the wall of their fortress. Anne said to Diana, Worry not, brave knight, our sturdy walls will repel the ill-crafted artillery of our enemy.

In their fort, the boys lined the wall of tiny windows with snowballs.

They’ll never get a single snowball through our windows! said Perry proudly. In the castle, the knights were almost ready for battle.

Prepare to don thine armor, said Anne.

Anne and Diana wrapped their heads in scarves so that only their eyes remained exposed. It was a perfect day for battle. There was plenty of sunlight to see each other’s forts. The town was two miles down the road so that fighting would be uninterrupted.

Diana smiled at Anne and then stood at attention.

I am ready to do battle, 0 Fair and Noble Knight, she said.

Suddenly a snowball crashed right through the top of their fort, knocking over their flag—and part of their wall.

Oh no! A surprise attack! cried Diana.

    Heathens! cried Anne.

The battle raged as snowballs flew back and forth. Anne and Diana scrambled to make more snowballs. It seemed like the boys had the advantage since they had more snowballs stored.

We’ve got them now! said Perry. The girls panicked as they made their ammunition.

Anne cried, Our castle cannot withstand the savage attacks of these barbarians!

Then we must redouble our efforts, said Diana as she worked at the snow. The girls used all their might to throw the snowballs.

Take that! they yelled as they pitched them.

Their arms hurt so much that they grunted while they threw. Anne threw the snowballs at the same wall, harder and harder. Diana had been throwing her snowballs anywhere in the vicinity of the boys. Changing strategy, she threw them at the same wall as Anne, harder and harder.

Nothing happened. The boys’ fort remained sturdy and steadfast. The girls hid their disappointment.

But they just needed the patience to persevere. After a few more minutes, the hamburger started to crumble. The wall, which the girls so cleverly targeted, fell, causing the roof to cave in.

Aahhhh! screamed Gilbert and Perry as their fort came down on them.

Crushed by the snow, they lay cowering and humiliated. Diana and Anne grabbed each other’s armor and jumped up and down.

We won! We won! they cried.

They were so busy celebrating that they
