I like to write, read, teach, sing, play the piano, swim, cook, play in the yard, and walk by the ocean. I prefer coloring books to plain paper, summer to winter, daytime to nightime, and morning to afternoon. I like large families, but I prefer to visit with one friend at a time. I love to study the Bible and discuss what God is doing in the world today, but I can't handle really scary adventure novels. I am more interested in people and animals than in rocks and plants. I tutor reading and writing and prefer second graders. I live with my husband Bill and cat Sasha in the center of California.

    THE FIRST RUNAWAYS

Adam dived into the water shattering the reflection that mocked him. In all his searching he had not found another creature that looked like him. Could he be the only one without a partner?

As he climbed up the embankment, the water easily slid off his skin unhindered by fur or feathers. Why was he designed like this? Perhaps he looked like God, his Creator. Adam loved his Creator who communicated with him every day in a way that none of the animals could. Maybe he was God’s partner. That would be OK, but… it would be so nice to touch someone like the animals touched, nuzzled, and preened each other.

Adam stretched out on a sunny rock and soon fell asleep. He awoke with a strange feeling in his side and rolled to change positions. Squinting through sleepy eyelids he saw a sleek figure. Whoa – no feathers! He blinked twice and stood, sure that this creature had not been there before his nap. Walking all around it to be sure he saw what he thought he saw, he let out a sharp Wow! This one looked just like him, with some major improvements. He petted its long hair and followed its arm down to the hand. Its fingers grasped his. It felt warm and its eyes sparkled.

At last, you have bone and flesh like I do, Adam said to this new creature. I will call you Woman because you are made like me. My name is Adam.

Adam, the woman repeated over and over. Her eyes showed the excitement she felt at the sound of her first word.

Adam laughed and embraced her. Thank you, Creator God! he said. Thank you for making Woman for me.

Other creatures came to welcome the woman. God made all these, too, Adam said as he petted, scratched, and tussled each one. Woman giggled as a wooly one nuzzled against her legs. She buried her fingers in its thick wool.

Come, Adam said, taking her by the hand. He led her over some rocks to the base of a waterfall. This is my favorite spot in the whole garden. It’s where I sit and talk to the Creator.

They sat together on the cool grass beside the stream. Moisture dripped from large green ferns and the air smelled fresh and sweet. Butterflies fluttered near flowers. Dragonflies darted quickly by their heads. Fish of different colors swam in the pool, sometimes jumping so that their bodies almost left the water completely. Woman laughed and clapped her hands.

Adam held out his hand and a small brown bird perched on his finger.

My Creator made all the flying creatures, too, he said, even these tiny sparrows. He gave me charge over the whole garden and all the animals. He wanted me to give them all names so I watched them closely to see what I should name them. I saw them play, eat, mate, and bear offspring.

The thing I noticed most of all was that all the other animals had counterparts. I was the only one of my kind. I’ve been incredibly happy living here with my Creator, but I knew I was incomplete. Then today, Woman, you were there when I woke up. I know God created you just for me.

Woman smiled and reached for Adam’s hand intertwining her fingers with his. Around them, squirrels nibbled nuts, bears gathered berries, and monkeys nimbly climbed trees to lunch on fruit.

    Are you hungry? Adam asked.

Woman’s eyebrows went up and her eyes questioned. Adam took her hand and led her towards some trees with clusters of bright red fruit.

I spent many days walking and talking with my Creator. I think He provided as many different kinds of food as there are different kinds of creatures.

Adam watched the woman taste different kinds of fruit. We may pick fruit from any tree we want, he said, except, of course, that one over there in the middle of the garden. He gestured with his hand. It’s the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and it’s God’s tree. It’s not for us. In fact, God said that if we eat from it, we will die.

As he spoke, an exquisite creature caught Woman’s eye. What is that one? she asked. Its scales sparkled green, purple and fuchsia in the filtered sunlight.

That’s a serpent, Adam replied. He is uniquely beautiful, isn’t he?

Woman held out her hand to the serpent, but it moved back into the foliage and disappeared.

Day after day Adam watched his new companion discover creatures she hadn’t seen before. The garden became new to him, too, because he was seeing it through her eyes. He liked sharing his life with someone like himself who could talk, ponder, and anticipate tomorrow.

She completes me, he thought. My life has always been good, but she adds fun. She wants to run with the goats, climb trees like the squirrels, and swing like the orangutans. I think she’d fly if she could.

    "Woman,
