Introduction to Nature Photography - Liz Masoner
Chapter 1
Introduction
Nature photography refers to photographing the world around us. Subjects vary from animals, birds, trees, flowers insects, lakes, mountains, and pretty much anything else that occurs in nature. Although they are certainly part of the natural world, most folks tend to exclude domestic animals from the idea of nature photography. Cows, horses, cats, dogs, and other domestic animals usually fall under livestock or pet photography although the lessons you'll learn in this book will certainly help improve your photography of these subjects as well.
In order to get awesome nature photos we need to learn a bit about how our cameras work, photographic disciplines like composition and lighting, and learn about the specific behaviors of our subjects. We'll also cover subject specific tricks for captive animals such as zoo animals. Don't worry, this isn't going to be a tour of expensive camera gear or a lot of technical jargon. Most compact cameras on the market can handle a wide array of nature photography situations and I hate jargon just as much as you do. Follow me and I'll guide you through ideas and steps to improve your photographic confidence and help you get great photos.

Chapter 2
Safety First
Before we get started with the fun stuff we need to cover safety. Please, PLEASE remember safety first when working with nature. The world around us is beautiful but it can also be dangerous. While some dangers seem obvious, like bears or snakes, others are not so easily recognized. Frightened deer can do a lot of damage if they chose to engage you rather than run away. Birds are equipped with sharp beaks and claws, especially large birds like Great Blue Herons. Even the plants you walk through can cause problems if you happen upon something like Poison Ivy, Stinging Nettles, or just wind up tripping over vines.
Be aware of your surroundings at all times and always leave yourself an escape route (preferably two). Keep your eyes and ears open and remember there is more out there than you and your subject.
