Freelance Writing For Every Occasion - Shirley J. Miller
Chapter 1: Use An Outline to Make Writing a Snap
While there are many ways to simplify the writing process one of the easiest is to create an outline to follow. It doesn’t have to be a detailed 5-page outline that covers each and every point you intend to make. Even a simple outline will help you organize your thoughts and keep you on track.
An outline may even get you past that initial writer’s block that seems to hit so many of us from time to time. Here are some of the benefits.
Helps you organize your thoughts
Narrow your topic
Decide what to write
Makes sure you cover all the important aspects
By working with an outline first, you’ll find yourself brainstorming as new ideas and thoughts come into play. Don’t waste lots of time but do jot down everything you can think about the subject you are going to write about.
A simple written outline style works fine – although I find some people like to map
out their topics. Start with a circle in the middle of the page with your main idea. Then have lines going to the outside of a wheel to address each of your sub thoughts. Even sub thoughts can have spikes out from them with various ideas attached to them.
Once you have a good idea of what you want to say, try to narrow your topic to those points that are the most important. Ask yourself who you are writing to, what are you trying to say, what actions you want them to take (and when) and how will you get your points across.
Write your first draft keeping all this in mind as you cover each item in more detail. Settle first on the most important things you want the reader to take away from your writing. Because you’re writing your first draft put everything, including the preverbal kitchen sink, into the draft. It’s easier to cut superfluous material in the rewrite stage than it is to go back and try to correct missing topics.
The following pages will take you into more detail on the different writing assignments you’re likely to encounter. Read them chapter by chapter – or simple choose the topics that meet your requirements. Remember to always keep your target audience at the forefront.
Good luck to you in all your writing projects.
Chapter 2: Making Reading Content Easy
Computer eye strain is common with anyone who spends lots of time reading articles or researching online. Now with the advent of the Kindle, even books online can cause eye strain.
The glare of the computer screen itself can be a culprit but there are many other contributing factors that you, as the author, can control. People are more likely to finish reading your work rather than skipping over it, if you pay more attention to the overall look of your content. Here are a few tips:
