      Betrayal and infidelity seem almost commonplace in our society today. One cannot even turn on the news or poke around the Internet without a story about one celebrity finding themselves in an infidelity scandal.

      I know of at least two friends going through divorce proceedings because of infidelity. But honestly it is not something that just happens to other people. It can happen to any of us. As society changes, so too can people. The man or woman you married can change. Sometimes the person who changed is you. For some, change can take your partner onto a path that leads to heartache for all involved: infidelity.

      Odds are, if you have not experienced it first hand, you know someone who has been cheated upon, or who has cheated themselves. An estimated 30-60% of married spouses admit to having had an extramarital affair.

      I myself know the sting of a cheating spouse. I had been with my first husband for over 6 years and I thought I knew him better than anyone. But it turned out I was more deceived than most of the people around him.

      Like most people finding out about infidelity, I had my suspicions early on. One statistic states that 85% of people who suspect infidelity later find it to be true. For me, there were little signs here and there, but mostly a gut instinct that told me something was hinky.

      But discovering infidelity is more than just a gut instinct—it is also a willingness to face the truth; a truth that can shatter everything you hold to be true. That alone can be a dark and fearful thing and requires a bravery you may not even know you have.

      What do you do if you suspect infidelity? How can you know if it really is infidelity, or if you are just suspicious by nature? You may not be able to point directly to infidelity, short of catching them in the act, but there are some steps you can take to try to find the truth, figure out what you need to do if in fact it is happening, and how you can move on from betrayal and become a better and stronger person.
