    The purpose of this book

    Welcome.

This book has been written to help those of you who find creating a future state map (of any business improvement type project) difficult or frustrating.

Future state mapping is a term that is closely linked with the Value Stream Mapping approach that is a staple in the Lean Manufacturing improvement toolkit. More and more I hear my clients talk about ‘future state maps’ with reference to any kind of visual plan for their future (manufacturing or otherwise) processes. This book aims to help you improve how your business pulls together its future state map, whatever format you choose to use. Whether your future state map is a value stream map, a process flow chart, a graphical representation or something else, this book will help you regardless.

Although this book won’t go into depth about specific techniques for future state mapping, it will discuss an approach that you can use to help ensure that you reach agreement with your colleagues and actually create a workable future state map. You will probably notice that this book is more about getting results than following a specific ‘text book’ approach. This is mainly to do with my preferred style of working, but it is also because I find so many businesses getting stuck because they try to do things perfectly rather than taking advantage of the benefits that they could have right before their eyes if only they took imperfect action now.

The route that I will demonstrate will help you and your team to share ideas and will help to keep you focussed so that you can all ‘pull in one direction’, as they say. There are so many ideas present within our businesses, so many good insights and experiences that when we combine them all together in our process improvement sessions we run the risk of not being able to manage all of the brilliance we bring to the table. I hope that by the end of this short book you will feel better prepared to take on these situations and generate future states maps that really will serve your business’ aspirations.

So, if you are tired of the ‘dead end’ mapping that we see all too often, then sit back, get comfortable and let me guide you through an alternative approach to creating your future states, an approach that will let you sift through
