    For thousands of years, mariners and voyagers kept themselves on course during the night by carefully watching Polaris, the guiding star. By day, they kept their eyes fixed on the compass. The core of a compass is the lodestone that always points to true north. No matter where they were in the world, they could always head towards where they wanted to be. In the modern day, guides and maps have made it far easier to get to where you are headed. However, one sticking point has always been the treacherous world of language barriers.

    The typical traveler is not going to be completely fluent in the language of every country he or she may visit. When packing their bags for Barcelona, they may have the foresight to throw in an English-Spanish dictionary. They may have even been lucky enough to take three or four Spanish classes before visiting. But those language tools and skills may not be fast or efficient enough for use in everyday life. Nothing in that dictionary or those Spanish classes will prepare them for the golden opportunity to tour Germany and speak with the people there. And this definitely doesn’t help speak with the Chinese exchange student
