About this ebook

'Get Your Business Noticed - 100 Digital Marketing Ideas' by Colin Kelly includes a foreword from TV presenter Jenni Falconer who calls it 'a seriously handy, gem of a book'.

It is a practical, easy to follow, jargon free guide to help small business owners get results from social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Pinterest and Google+.

For the last 3 years, Colin has delivered some of Scotland's highest rated social media training courses throughout the public and private sectors. He has sat in the boardrooms of large, highly profitable companies with their senior teams. He has helped new start ups find the right audience and connect with the people they hope will buy their product or service.

Colin has a 16 year background in journalism and is best known for his work as Gadget and Technology presenter on STV's 'The Hour' and his time as host of 'Morning Briefing' on BBC Radio Scotland.

During his time at Real Radio, he presented the 'Sunday Business Hour' which saw him interview some of Scotland's most successful business owners including Sir Tom Farmer, Michelle Mone and Charan Gill.

Colin learned a huge amount from the time he spent with these people. This, combined with the skills and experience he's gained more recently, gives this book an edge.

Colin writes in a direct, easy to follow style. He knows social networks can be confusing and that you have a limited amount of time to spend on them. Above all, he believes social networks can be a force for good and that they represent a powerful opportunity to get your business noticed for the right reasons and at minimal cost.

    PREFACE

What follows are 100 digital marketing ideas to help get your business noticed. This book is a collection of knowledge and best practice based on the social media training I’ve delivered to companies all over the UK in the last 3 years.

Reading this book won’t make your business better and won’t develop your skills. That’s the hard part. You need to take the knowledge contained in this book and start applying it day in, day out. Only then will you reap the benefits.

Above all, this book stresses the importance of the right attitude. To do well in this new, digital world you must be honest, open to new ideas, interested in what’s going on around you and willing to learn.

Some ‘get it’, some don’t. There are winners and losers and the gulf between the two is more marked than ever. I love helping businesses and individuals change. Not because I get a kick out of Facebook and Twitter but because I enjoy helping these businesses and individuals become happier, healthier and more productive.

    I hope you will too.

    1 BE PASSIONATE

Perhaps the most important advice in this entire book.

Speak with passion and people will be drawn to you.

It doesn’t matter whether they currently need what you are offering or whether they even understand what you do.

Be passionate in all things and you will reap rewards.

This book assumes you’re passionate about whatever business you’re in. If not, either find the passion or get out and do something else.

It’s better if you are passionate about more than business.

    Be passionate about people.

    Be passionate about life itself.

Passion is contagious. It is something everyone wants.

It can’t be manufactured. If passion is something you

currently lack, stop reading this immediately and

return when you have discovered it.

If you can feel the passion, hold tight and read on.

2 NEVER SPAM OR HARD SELL

It can be extremely tempting but it does untold harm.

You will never see the recipient scowling at you.

You won’t hear what they call you.

And you won’t read the highly abusive email they really want to send you.

But if you spam someone’s email, cold call or engage in other desperate measures to increase sales, your business will suffer.

My email inbox is a personal space. Don’t invade it.

By following the advice in this book, you won’t need to.

And you shouldn’t want to anyway. Why waste time speaking to someone who doesn’t want what you’re selling?

The major advantage of digital marketing is being able to find the people who do want what you’re selling and talking to them.

    3 WRITE REGULAR BLOG POSTS

This is one of the quickest ways to get your business noticed.

Keep your posts short, aim for 250-500 words and write about the topics your potential customers are interested in.

Your website is optimised for particular key words, for example ‘Social Media training, Glasgow’.

But what if someone visits Google and types ‘How does Facebook control how many people see your message?’

I’d like to be found for that search term because it’s closely related to my business and whoever typed it may well need social media training. They just don’t know it yet.

Because I wrote a blog on that subject and used that title I’m now returned high up Google on that search term and it drives people who’ve never heard of me onto my blog where they engage with me.

You can write blogs that explain what you do and how you got here, share relevant news, comment on particular issues and ask questions of your readers.

Absolutely anything you want. The key is to make it relevant to your business.

And how often is ‘regularly’? Aim for quality not quantity. Perhaps once a week to start with and then you can build it up as you see the positive results.

4 USE WORDPRESS.COM TO HOST YOUR BLOG

It is, by some considerable distance in my opinion, the best blogging platform.

Easy to set up and use, it offers great flexibility in terms of look and layout and is very well built, keeping spam comments to a minimum and performing well on Google.

There are 2 sides to Wordpress - wordpress.org is for advanced users who self-host their blog.

Most beginners will want to use wordpress.com which is perfectly sufficient and includes a rich variety of free themes which look great.

If you want your blog to work with Google’s Author Rank, where your profile picture is displayed alongside each blog post in the Google results, you’ll need to choose a theme that displays author information.

A list of those that do is available here:

5 think carefully about the title of each BLOG post and connect to your objectives

Spend time thinking about what your audience is looking for and how they’re asking for it.

What exactly are they typing into Google? The Google Keyword Tool might help with this.

You might refer to your product or service by one name, potential customers might call it something very different.
