Chapter 1 - Virtue and the Art of Cinema

We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. —The 13th Article of Faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (emphasis added).

As an LDS artist, this scripture speaks to me on many levels. As a creator of art—I am a writer, actor and filmmaker—the admonition for honesty and truth reminds me that I owe it to myself and my audience to address topics honestly and that I can take the experiences of life endured by myself and others and share them through my work. As a patron of the arts, I’m reminded to seek out all that is virtuous, lovely, of good report and praiseworthy.
