Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a highly successful novel. It was first published in 1989. It is a historical fiction novel. The story revolves around the adventures of ten year old Annemarie Johansen after the Nazi invasion of Denmark in the year 1943.

It is said that before writing the novel, Lowry visited Denmark and she spoke with people who had helped rescue Jews from the Holocaust. She also visited farms and fishing villages to learn more about their experiences.
