“Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry one of the most highly acclaimed historical novels.
The story is set during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. The German forces have occupied Denmark for three years. Like in other neighboring countries, they have started hunting the Jews in Denmark, their businesses are being closed.
Annemarie, the central character of the novel, is a ten year old Dane girl. Ellen Rosen is her best friend. She is Jewish.
When the soldiers come looking for Ellen's family, she is sent to the house of Annemarie. The story describes how Annemarie saves her friend and her family from the German soldiers.
Eventually, Annemarie helps them escape Denmark.

Chapter One: Introduction
Number the Stars
by Lois Lowry is a highly successful novel. It was first published in 1989. It is a historical fiction novel. The story revolves around the adventures of ten year old Annemarie Johansen after the Nazi invasion of Denmark in the year 1943.
Ellen Rosen, a Jew, is Annemarie’s best friend. She must help her Jewish friend escape the country.
It is said that Lois Lowry got the idea for Number the Stars
from her best friend Annelise. Her best friend, Annelise, had grown up in Denmark during the German occupation.
Lowry had heard several stories from her friend and the descriptions of the objects such as German dark and shiny boots come from the stories told by her friend.
Before writing Number the Stars
, Lowry frequented several libraries and studied the history of Second World War. Some characters and events in the novel are inspired by the author’s own experiences and the things she came to know during researching the history of the Second World War.
The character of Peter is based on a real member of the Danish Resistance named Kim Malthe Brunn.
It is said that before writing the novel, Lowry visited Denmark and she spoke with people who had helped rescue Jews from the Holocaust. She also visited farms and fishing villages to learn more about their experiences.
Number the Stars
won the prestigious Newbery Medal in the year of its publication.
Even today the book is very popular and it is in the course of study of English Literature in many schools in America and Europe. It is in fact required reading in these schools in both America and Europe.
