    THE ABORTED

    By Miles Cameron

    Preface

Paula Angstmann was happier than she had ever been. She truly believed there was nothing else in the world that could make her happier. Her husband, Jay, was finally making the big bucks working as a computer specialist in network communications at a large Cable television company. He had been doing so for thirteen years and had become highly successful. Paula hadn’t done too poorly herself as an extremely motivated young Stock Broker working for one of the largest firms in Los Angeles. Being recently promoted made her feel all the more successful.

After meeting though a mutual friend Jay and Paula had decided to marry. Paula had just begun her career at Greenway and O’Neal about the same time as she married.

Now after four years, she was finally moving up in the company. Coming through on the Fillinger deal had finally put her over the top and in a position to ask for the promotion she believed she so richly deserved.

Prior to moving to Beverly Hills they lived in a small posh LA suburb. Jay had gotten a great deal on their beautiful ranch style home. It was one of the more expensive ranches set high above the San Fernando Valley. It had all the yuppie necessities including a spectacular in-ground swimming pool. It was an Olympic sized masterpiece. Surrounding the pool was a white marble rim with mother of pearl inlays. Of course it was equipped with all the latest gadgets, including an automatic pool cover. It was Paula and Jay’s pride and Joy. Oh, yes the Gods had definitely smiled upon Mr. and Mrs. Jay Anstmann but then again......

All good things must come to an end.

Chapter 1: - The Hidden Truth

Jay and Paula had decided to stay home and celebrate Paula’s promotion.

Paula, I want to make a toast. A toast to the next big thing at Greenway, Angstmann and O’Neal Jay said proudly.

No! If I am ever in a position to get rid of Greenway, it would be; O’Neal and Angstmann. Greenway would be out on his ass laughing loudly Paula boasted He’s almost worthless!

Oh you’re so bad, it’s no wonder you’ve got so few friends at work, and you’re such a hard ass. Jay said laughingly.

Paula leaned over and whispered seductively.

But you know you love it, don’t you? grabbing at his crotch and laughing.

    Don’t you? Don’t you?

Yes, Yes, I love you very much. Jay shouted cheerfully, as he stepped back trying to escape her groping.

She was on her fifth gin and tonic and was feeling hot to trot. She slowly put her arms around him.

Why don’t we just skip dinner and go straight to bed. I’m feeling so horn...,

Stopping herself from saying it out loud, she moved close to his ear and whispered horny.

Jay with a look of both surprise and excitement, answered

Oh, anything for my new executive. grabbing her hand he pulled her up from the couch. As he stood towering over her, he slowly reached into her blouse and caressed her breast gently.

Come on honey lets go to bed she slurred as she gently nibbled his ear.

As they walked toward the bedroom a week old copy of the Wall Street Journal laid gathering dust on the hallway coffee table. The hallway coffee table was their designated junk table.

They would pile all the assorted junk mail and news papers they received daily.

Between the wall and the table, a small white compact lay. Paula’s birth control pills had fallen between the table and the wall. There they lay for the last week. She had missed taking her pills for the entire week. Getting pregnant was definitely the last thing she wanted to do.

Jay would always say "Children are the key to a fulfilled life.

"When it came to kids though, Paula wasn’t so philosophical. The house in the country, the picket fence, lots of children running around. These things did not motivate her. Her motivation was money and power. And with money came power. She also believed that children would only be a burden that would either stifle or end her career completely. Ending her career was the last thing on her mind. She had seen how children had changed the lives of a countless number of her friends. She wasn’t about to let that happen to her anytime soon.

As the sun rose the next morning Jay awoke with Paula cuddled up next to him.

It was another beautiful Saturday in sunny Cali-forn-yi-a.

There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky.

Honey wake up; I’ve got some errands to run. Jay muttered.

Oh... I’m not feeling too well. Why did you make me drink so much?

Paula answered in an almost inaudible voice.

I didn’t make you drink. You made you drink he replied in defense.

You shouldn’t have drank so much. You know what it does to you.

Yeah I know she whined Could you get me some alka-seltzer?

Yeah, just a minute. he answered sorely.

As he walked from the room, suddenly Paula doubled over in pain.

Damn, I must have drank way too much! Damn it! she swore.

Jay returned with a small glass bubbling over with alka-seltzer.

"Here ya go. As he handed over the glass he began to

Sing Plop plop fizz fizz oh what a relief it is.

She quickly swallowed it down and lay back down.

Look, I’ve got to run to the office. Do you want anything? he asked.

She replied sounding as though she had a large frog in her throat.

No I’ll be fine after the alka-seltzer kicks in, it usually does the trick.

Throwing on some Dockers and his favorite Polo Tee, Jay quickly wolfed down a piece of toast and slammed down a glass of orange juice.

Jay, when are you going to be home? Early I hope, we’ve got that office get together tonight. You did remember didn’t you?

He stepped back with an innocent look on his face.

    Say what? He grumbled.

"You know; dinner at Falcones; eight O’clock. You did remember didn’t you?

Don’t tell me you forgot. With a look of disgust she buried her head under her pillow.

I’ve been talking about this forever. I can see how you’d forget she buzzed sarcastically. Honey he whined, do you really need to go to this thing? I’m really not in the mood to smooze with ‘Frick and Frack’."

He would always refer to Paula’s bosses as ‘Frick and Frack’.

You know I’ve got to. she answered sincerely,

Greenway and O’Neal or as you so eloquently put it Frick and Frack expect me to be there, I’m sort of the guest of honor don’t cha know!"

All right all right he repeated as he walked out of the room I should be back by three or so.

He returned almost as quickly as he left

Hey, is my blue suit clean?

Well, did you wear it last week?

No, I don’t think so he answered sheepishly.

Make sure it’s ready he barked as he grabbed his Tommy Hilfiger jacket that hung from the back of their bedroom door.

Bye, honey I’ll see you later he said bending down and kissing the side of her head.

No sooner than he had left, she covered her head and fell fast to sleep.

She slept soundly until well into the afternoon.

After a few hours, she awoke and slowly crawled from her bed. Dragging herself down the hallway she made her way to the bathroom. She stared lifelessly into the mirror.

God, I feel awful. she muttered. I’ve got to get on the ball.

Opening the sliding doors she began fiddling with the faucets.
