Acknowledgments
We are grateful to our mentor, Dr. John Cooper, and to his colleagues Tassia Riordan and Rebecca Pillsbury who first taught us about the Judge and its destructive role in people's lives and in society. We are also grateful to our dear friend and colleague, the late Ann Scanlan, and to our many clients who have taught us so much more about how to free the Inner Child from the domination of the Judge. Although the stories in this book are composites, we thank all of the individuals whose courage and openness in individual therapy, groups, and workshops gave us the stories, drawings, and clay sculpts on which to build this work.
We wish to thank our colleague and friend, Catherine Owens, a gifted addictions counselor who introduced us to the Inner Child concept that fits so well with the Judge concept.
We wish to thank our colleague, Diane-Kate Murphy whose grasp of this material and how it should be communicated was invaluable in bringing this work to completion. She also put us in contact with Bergit Rockmore, a very talented artist who so generously provided the cover art work that expresses the essence of Freeing the Inner Child. We wish to thank Bergit for the cover art..
We wish to thank our children and their spouses who were all very patient and tolerant of the time and effort it took for us to write and complete this book. We also wish to thank Kym Beckman and Max Brand for their illustrations that have added so much to the content of the book.
We dedicate this book to our grandchildren in the hope that this and our other work will help to bring some peace and sanity to the troubled world in which we all live. We hope that they will live in a more Judge-free world than we have experienced.

Introduction
Since the publication of our book Shrinking the Judge: Freeing the Inner Child in 1996, we have led countless workshops and seminars teaching people about the psychological nature of the Judge (Inner Terrorist) and its destructive role in their lives, including their relationships. We have been able to teach people to be aware that their Inner Child is closely related to their Judge in a struggle for domination, power, and control. By learning how their Inner Child is connected to their Judge, they can more safely and effectively free their Inner Child and re-claim it for their own emotional health and further development. Many people have encountered great difficulty trying to re-claim their Inner Child when they are not aware of the role of their Judge in dominating and controlling their Inner Child. Challenging your Judge for control of your Inner Child can elicit intense emotion related to the stress response – the fight or flight
response. Anger and fear are the basic emotions of the stress response. Accessing the image of your Judge and your Inner Child provides you with valuable tools that you can use to successfully free your Inner Child from the grip of your Judge. A common experience of many people is that they are amazed that their own drawing or visual image of their Judge can stir up such intense emotion. Some people would say, But, I can’t draw, I can only do stick figures.
Even stick figure drawings can elicit the psychological stress experience of their Judge and provide them with this valuable tool that they can use to reduce the intensity of their inner source of stress.
Many people who have read the Judge book have been able to derive great benefit from the information conveyed in the book. They accessed their image of what their Judge looked like. They also had an image of their Inner Child and their Warrior archetype. There was enough information in the Judge book for them to proceed to use the fearless inner power of their Warrior to confront their Judge and break its dominating bond with the Inner Child. Some people had the natural intuition to apply these concepts on their own with great effectiveness. But, others were in need of more specific guidance and directions in order to apply the concepts in an effective manner.
This how to …
workbook was written to provide these specific steps and more detailed guidance that will allow countless numbers of people to learn these profound concepts and apply them in order to further their personal growth and development. These concepts relating the Judge, Inner Child, and Warrior in a simple, yet powerful psychological model provide people with some basic tools for making substantial positive changes in their lives, including reducing stress.
In our experience, there are some people for whom the stress of working with this psychological model is far too intense for them to
