      Ryder's Mate

      Sanctuary, a small town unlike any other, nestled snuggly under the city of Jackson and next to Chelsea in the lower part of Michigan. It was surrounded by picturesque forests and streams that protected the town from I-94. Just a hint of the sound of vehicles betrayed the existence of that busy expressway.

      Despite its solitude, Sanctuary acquired a reputation for unusual inhabitants. And it was valid. From the Chief of Police to the bus boy down at the local diner, all had one thing in common: they were supernatural.

      Recently-married Chief of Police Dane Alistair was a werewolf. His wife Chloe was also a Were, a jaguar. A few months back, they'd suffered an especially difficult time; Chloe had been attacked and nearly raped by Wayne Krantz. It happened just before they were mated and neither forgot how close they'd come to losing everything.

      It made Dane, and the rest of the town, especially thankful for the dedicated men on Sanctuary's small police force. Men like Ryder James. The trustworthy Ryder was huge, with wide shoulders and long legs that ate up the ground easily.

      But Ryder was memorable for more than his size. His hair was dark and a touch too long for police standards. His eyes sparkled with tiny flickers of gold, making them look almost like they were dancing. He was dark skinned, a flush of health painting his cheeks with a pink tint. His gun belt hung low across his hips, the result of a waist far narrower than the shoulders above and the powerful legs beneath. It combined with the long hair to give him a swashbuckling look, like a rapier duelist of old London or a western gunfighter. His small delight in that was part of the reason he defied expectations about hair length. Not that he didn't respect his role. He wore his uniform with pride, his badge a sparkle of authority on his wide chest.

      He enjoyed his job and patrolled the streets of Sanctuary with solemn dignity. He took everything seriously, from the kids racing down the back streets to the old men who played checkers early every morning. He knew them all by name and made sure they knew him.

      This day had been cold and dark and his scheduled patrol finally neared
