The Game of Job Hunting - Valerie Hockert, PhD
Introduction
Learn the complete process of writing resumes for oneself and others. Learn how to conceal unemployment, and unfavorable employment, how to use non-paid employment to an advantage, the process of interviewing, answering interviewer's questions and more. This book is designed for all job seekers. Writing cover letters, answering job ads, where to look for jobs, and tips for interviewing are included in this book.
PART ONE: AN INTRODUCTION
Seeking and securing the job of your choice actually becomes a game, a game in which the rules must be played right--from beginning to end (to writing the resume to securing the interview to writing the follow-up letter)--if you want to win. The first rule is the resume must be written properly.
Why? Because a properly written resume is a necessary marketing tool to getting the job that you want. It has the power to stir a potential employer's interest in wanting to meet you. However, if the resume is not good enough, it can cause this potential employer to toss it aside. Employers and employment personnel use resumes as an effective way to screen applicants for interviews. Although many resumes are received every day, few are impressive enough for the applicant to be considered for an interview. Now, with the help of this book, you will be able to write a good resume without paying the price of a costly service.
To have a good resume written by a resume service can be costly, with an average price being from $50.00 to $100.00 for a one page resume; and almost double that for a two-page resume. The resume service does not guarantee you will get a job; it only supplies you with a supposedly wellwritten resume, based on the information that you supply. Then, whenever you'd want to look for another job, your resume would need to be updated, and additional fees would be charged. A major disadvantage to using a resume service is that the resume tends to look like it was written by someone else, and not by you.
Using this book can save you money in two ways. First, it is much more inexpensive than most resume writing services. Second, it is reusable. The book is designed for job applicants of all levels--from the high school graduate, to the doctorate degree holder, to the woman re-entering the job market. You may use this book as many times as you wish, and for as many different jobs as you wish.
Included in this book are resume forms, samples, directions, guidelines, and self-inventory sheets. The inventory sheets are helpful in gathering all pertinent information and to arrange it into a working format for your resume. The inventory sheets also aid you in reviewing your strengths, weaknesses, and skills, and in gaining confidence in yourself.
A good resume is of great importance and can't be over-emphasized. It projects a picture of you to the
