    CHAPTER 1

    KATE

Wake up sleepy head! Tricia’s boisterous voice thundered at me.

For a minute I almost thought it was the voice of my own mother. It was three months after the divorce and I was just starting to put together something that resembled a life. It took me a few weeks to get adjusted to a new city but with my bestie’s advice and rent-free bed, everything was starting to look up again.

Today I had an important job interview. When I was married, I worked diligently as a tax specialist as my man defended the country. No longer. That was a thing of the past. With the move came a complete break from my previous life. It was time for a new career.

I’m not one who has a lot of skills. As a matter of fact, I’m probably the least talented person I know. Tricia was always encouraging me to step beyond my boundaries though. That’s how I knew she was the perfect right hand.

What are you going to wear? Tricia asked, again just like my momma.

I peered at her from the bed. Tricia was the one who looked like she was dressed for success today. As a person who dealt with designer clothes for a living, Tricia was as stylish as you’d imagine. She rocked Gucci this, Fendi that, from head to toe though I was never sure if the clothes she wore were purchased or borrowed from the boutique she worked for. It didn’t matter because it gave her the confidence.

I was staying in Tricia’s extra room, formerly her mini office. I’d gotten a twin bed and a small dresser to hold my things. It was a long way down from having my own but it would have to do for now. The most important thing right now was getting myself together and back on my feet for good.

Tricia pulled through my dresser as I swallowed my face in my pillow. I wasn’t up for an early morning sermon.

See, the best way to ensure you get the job is to give them something to look at. Give them some eye candy, show off the merchandise, Tricia said as she ripped through what little clothes I had packed. Most of my things were still haphazardly left in the closet from the initial move in.

I don’t believe this, Tricia said with her hands on her hips. It looked like she was about to go Precious on me as she bore a strong resemblance to the actress Mo’Nique.

Where are your good clothes? Tricia snapped at me. I ignored her and sunk deeper back to sleep. SMACK! She snatched the sheets off the bed and slapped me on the arm.

Wake up Kate! you aren’t about to sit around here being depressed all year. I know your divorce is final and all, but life has got to go on. You got to get up.

SIGH. I grunted and obliged to get on my feet. Everything was a haze. I wasn’t trying to do anything. My body felt paralyzed even though it was moving. Time to face the world Kate.

Tricia had ransacked my entire wardrobe. The outfit she had pulled was more suitable for the club than a job interview, a black pencil skirt and short sleeved blouse. That was not going to work. Tricia had a peculiar look on her face.

When did you start buying so cheap? she scolded. I threw my hands up. There was no reasoning with her.

You know what, I don’t have anything that can fit you but I might have some heels. At the very least you’ll have on some decent shoes.

Tricia disappeared into her room. I folded the clothes she destroyed as I pondered my new life. Just six months ago I was reconciling my marriage and all was well. Now here I was in a new city, folding clothes in a room my best friend let me live in and officially divorced. I had no idea how I got here. Everything I was going through felt completely foreign. At times I daydreamed that I was watching a movie, this could not be my actual real life. No way.

Tricia came back with a pair of Italian designer shoes I couldn’t even pronounce the name of. She shoved the shoes at me and left me to get dressed. I gave no resistance as I quietly did as I was told; putting on the outfit and the shoes after washing up for the day.

After getting the final approval, I headed out to the interview. I’d been on a few other interviews since I’d moved and they all ended the same. I’d walk in, smile, shake hands, answer a few questions about my character, shake hands, fake smile again, and walk out never to hear from the company again.

I was completely over the whole thing but I figured trying again wasn’t going to hurt anything. Besides, Tricia was right. If I didn’t do anything a year could easily slip by of me moping around getting nothing accomplished.

The job was some listing I’d found on Monster.com. Well I didn’t find it; Tricia and I’s friend Rashon actually found it and referred me to it. He was one of the few friends I had left after the whole divorce debacle. I learned an important lesson about letting my whole life, emotional and social, be wrapped up in another person. When that person leaves so do those other things.

It didn’t matter now, as I was in my car and en route to yet another uncomfortable interview. My little white Honda Civic had certainly seen better days as I’d totally neglected it since moving. It was the last of my concerns. As long as it started up when I cranked it we were good in my mind.

The job was with some company called Oakleaf Furniture. From what I managed to read online they were some kind of wholesale company that specialized in business-to-business dealings. I had exactly zero experience in the area but it didn’t hurt to try so I thought.

The ride was only about fifteen minutes from Tricia’s place. It was a neat little building on the corner of an older shopping strip, which was now slowly being converted into a business park. I parked in front and put the car in park. It was time.

I had no idea how I let Tricia dress me like this. I swear it looked like I was going to happy hour to pick up a date instead of trying to pick up employment. I could barely button the skin tight blouse Tricia picked out. Oh
