Chapter One
Contract Murder
A room fills with blood as a woman lays on the floor, bleeding to death. There is a man by the side door with a gun in his hands.
Mom No!
Code stared in horror.
Code let's go,
Laine said. We have to get out of here now.
No we can't leave her here.
Laine pulls Code away from his dying mother. Before they leave, Code and Laine hear Code's Mother says Laine you know what to do.
Present day
Eight years after the death of his mother. Code finally stops hiding. Laine gets out of an old car and opens the door for Code. Code steps out of the car slowly. Laine grabs a battered duffle bag and walks up to the front door of the mansion. The mansion is huge—larger than any three mansions.
So, this is our home Laine?
Yes, but we shouldn’t talk out here. We don’t know who could be listening to us.
A shadow waits in the bushes across the street, watching them closely.
Code opens the door and steps inside. As he looks inside, Laine turns back to the street, spotting the shadow as it fades and disappears.
Wow, there’s a lot of room in this place.
Code turns to his friend, his gaze narrowing. So, Laine. Can you tell me why we’re here?
Laine shrugs. "I thought it was about time to get you out of that old basement.
Code nods, remembering the eight years they’d spent in hiding. Laine worked—odd jobs, mostly—earning enough to keep them in cash. Code stayed in the basement of one of Laine’s coworkers. Once a week, they would go outside for five minutes before afternoon rush hour, always careful not to be spotted.
Code? You okay? You seem to be spacing out there.
Yeah, I’m okay. It’s just—
What’s going on, Code?
I understand leaving the basement. But look at this place. I feel like this mansion is too big. Can’t we just get a smaller house?
We need it for your protection.
