Chapter 1
Emergency in the Park
As it often does, the little black gadget that Jake wears on his belt makes its jangle noise, and he puts it up to his ear. As a dog, I get my information from scent first, then sight—not gadgets. I leave gadgets to humans.
This time, I detect a subtle change in his scent, then observe Jake go on alert. His ears don’t perk up like a dog’s ears when the dog is being extra attentive. But, Jake gets very still, his brow furrows, his eyes narrow and focus. Something’s up!
Jake’s voice gets tense and low. Jake is involved in a serious-sounding conversation that ends with I’ll be right there!
Immediately, he turns to his wife T.J. and declares, There’s a young child lost somewhere in the park. I’ve gotta go.

T.J. instantly turns serious, too. She helps as Jake takes off his tool belt and drops it on the floor. Giving her a worried glance, he rushes to his pickup truck, dusting sawdust off his jeans while on the run.
I don’t always understand all of the words that my man and woman say, but I can pick up their mood by listening to the tone of their voices and watching their body language. I definitely can tell this is something critical, maybe even life-threatening for someone.
As T.J. watches Jake drive off, I move up close to her side on the porch to give her support. She absentmindedly reaches down and strokes me softly on the head. I know that makes her feel better when she’s sad or worried—and I’m more than happy to take any petting she has to give.
The luckiest day of my dog life was when I wandered up to Jake and T.J. Pickett’s ranch in Uvalde County, just north of Utopia, Texas. Jake is a park ranger at nearby Lost Maples State Natural Area, and T.J. is a traveling veterinarian, caring for animals in many of the surrounding small hill country towns. Although they live at the park now, they’re in the process of building a log cabin on their ranch. They tell me it’s almost finished, and they’ll be
