About this ebook

This book is not for dummies, but it is a guide for the modern indie author.

Big Publishing spends big bucks on professional copywriters who make terrible books sound good. Meanwhile, indie authors can't get traction for their remarkable books, and inferior pulp with more spit and polish takes the spotlight.

Most authors suck at writing sales and marketing copy for their own books. Not because they're terrible writers, but because writing copy is completely different from writing a book. The good news is these new skills can be learned.

This book teaches the modern indie author how to write awesome sales copy. It's full of real techniques and easy to follow processes, not just theory and random examples that leave you struggling to find the connection.

Best of all, it's just the right size to allow you to put these ideas to work immediately--and start selling more books!

Since 2002, I've made my living as a "digital business strategist". In short, I solve problems. Along the way, I stumbled into the publishing community. First it was co-hosting an author interview show that became a nationally syndicated radio program & podcast. Then it was launching a serialized free audio books service. I was even asked to write a couple of books in the "for Dummies" series, so I have in-the-trenches experience in what it means to be an author. In 2011, I launched an author education service with Jeff Moriarty. Now I'm a publishing coach. I help should-be authors get their awesome ideas published. I also help established authors who've become "shipwrecked" by sweeping changes in publishing how to use digital tools to reestablish their carrers!

    Introduction

Every day, a few thousand new books are listed on Amazon.com and other marketplaces. It’s easy to publish a book, so that number will continue to climb. The result? More choices will be available for the would-be reader.

Your book is going to part of that growing pool. And no matter how well it’s written, it has to be purchased before your brilliance can be exposed to the reader. Even books made available for free are not immune to this reality: Your book must entice someone to own it.

To do that, you need to write effective sales copy for your book.

News flash: Authors are horrible at this. In the words of one author friend of mine: It took me 135,000 words to tell the story, and you expect me to boil it down to a few hundred?

I appreciate the sentiment and know the challenge of the task before him. But he’s wrong. That’s not what I want him to do at all. Instead, I want him to craft a few hundred well-chosen words that compel a would-be reader to download the book. That’s all.

In this book I’ll teach you how to choose and place those words.

This book is designed to be read either start to finish or in a less-linear fashion for those of the sampling variety. I admit to being among the latter, so here’s a quick guide to tell you about the rest of the book. All of the books we produce from ePublish Unum will follow a similar flow.

The next chapter provides a 101 view of the topic to get us on common ground. I’ll show you why having great sales copy for your book is not only important, but also how it’s different from other summaries you might need to write for your book.

In Chapter 3, I show you a few real-world examples of sales copy in the wild, giving you some familiarity with the flow and format of (mostly) well-crafted sales copy. Chapter 4 introduces you to a couple of tools that may help you break out of writing the book mode and into writing the sales copy mode. It’s a big shift for some, and these tools can help.

I dive right into the work–or as we call it, The Hows–in Chapter 5. It’s the longest chapter in the book, and it details an excellent method of building successful sales copy. Yet it’s not a formulaic approach. Rather, it helps you uncover the remarkable and communicate a compelling reason to buy your
