About this ebook

Do you believe rules were meant to be broken? If so, this improvisational quilt-as-you-go technique is for you. Instead of dealing with precise paper patterns and cutting measurements, you'll learn how to piece fabric onto small, manageable batting blocks. Let your creative juices flow as you quilt directly on the blocks (not the entire quilt!), whether in large abstract zigzags or small structured stitches. After the blocks have been joined, all you need to do is add backing fabric and binding, and—voilà—it's finished!

'Quilt-As-You-Go Made Modern' by Jera Brandvig shows you how to put your quilt together after it has been pieced and quilted. You can do your piecing directly onto needle-punched batting for a quick project or make your quilt more traditionally by sewing your fabric onto the batting and piecing the batting together. Then, quilting can be done using the walking foot or using free-motion quilting.I like the variety of patterns offered for the quick piecing directly onto the batting. Most of the patterns are good for scraps, too.Brandvig offers a couple of different methods for putting the quilt together, including using the traditional method of sashings between the blocks, but also sewing the batting all together, pressing well, and adding a back, as for traditioanl quilting.I have known about quilt-as-you-go quilting, but this book offers so many more patterns and ideas, and cements my ideas into concrete steps and methods that I can use. This book will also help the beginner, as the steps are easily demonstrated here. This is a fun book!

This book helps with QAYG techniques but most of the blocks are too simple. The variation ideas, however, could be very helpful in creating more complex designs. For a disabled person who might have trouble machine quilting a whole big quilt, QAYG could be the answer.
