TO MY READERS
First of all, I’d like to thank you for taking a more active role in caring for your horse, and in choosing my book to broaden your knowledge. I’ve been around horses my entire adult life, and raised and trained my mare Athena. I am not a veterinarian, a farrier, or a certified
horse trainer, but I have learned a great deal over many years and in owning several horses. I don’t claim to be an expert; every day I spend with my horse teaches me something new. The information in my book is not meant to replace the advice of a professional, but simply to educate others on the basics of caring for an average horse. I’ve done my best to give accurate information, including brand names of many products designed for use with horses. I’ve included a glossary of terms at the back of this book to help you understand some of the horsey terms you may come across. Any word you see underlined in the main text will be found in the glossary of terms. It’s my hope that in some small way, I can help to reduce the number of cases of accidental
owner neglect or mistreatment of horses in this country. Perhaps the parent of a child who says, I want a horse!
will read this and realize, Gee, I don’t think we can manage this
; or maybe even, Hey, we can probably handle it!
. If you’re the latter, I encourage you to do more reading, talk to a vet or farrier, people at the feed store, online horse communities, or even the neighbor down the street who has horses. Learn as much as you can about your equine responsibility, and the rewards can be great. Make yourself the very best horse parent you can be!
Happy trails,
Markie Madden
CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
Hi there! My name is Athena. I’m a 10 year old Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred crossbreed mare (adult female horse). I don’t remember much about my horse mother, since I was only a year old when my human mother came to take me home. Living with her and her family has been wonderful! She knows how to take care of me, what to feed me and how much, when I need medicine, and all the things that I need to stay healthy. However, I know that other horses aren’t as lucky as me, not necessarily because their owners don’t have enough money to care for them, but because they don’t have enough knowledge. So I’d like to take the opportunity to pass on a little education, and help teach you how easy it really can be to have a backyard horse.
CHAPTER TWO
Types
There are many different types of horses, from tiny miniature, to huge draft horses. There are so many breeds, that’s it’s impossible to touch on them in a book such as this is intended. As I’m using it in this book, the term average horse
is simply meant to discuss a typical riding horse. This can be a purebred animal, or one who is a cross of two or more popular breeds. If you’re seriously interested in buying a horse, I encourage you to do some research into the different breeds. Each will have its good points as well as its bad points.
Choosing a sex is also important when you’re considering buying, possibly as you‘re looking through ads in the paper. Stallions ¹should only be owned by reputable breeders who are aware of the special circumstances and challenges that owning one of these horses comes with. The terms colt² or filly ³ are generally used to describe young horses, sometimes up to 2 years of age; often horses this young haven’t yet been trained to carry a rider. A gelding⁴refers to a male horse who has been castrated (in a manner similar to male dogs), and a mare ⁵ is a mature female.
Mares, like any mature female animal, will undergo an estrus cycle, in which their bodies are prepared to mate. Some mares may become moody during this time, and they may be more difficult to handle. Although, my mom says she doesn’t have any trouble with me, so maybe that’s just a training issue. Of course, if anyone near you has a stallion, you may notice your mare’s attention span is very low when she is in heat.
If a male horse is castrated at a young age, generally before 2 years old, it helps to reduce the amount of male
