Your Complete Guide to the Recruitment Process - Neil Hay

    Conclusion

    INTRODUCTION

What is it about the interview that can bring even the most articulate, well-versed and superbly qualified candidates to their knees? One minute a paragon of confidence and style, the next a blubbering wreck stumbling in response to that most simple of questions ‘can you confirm your name please?’

Joking aside, the interview-phobics among you may be relieved to know that every single one of us at some stage suffers the interview jitters.

In this guide to the recruitment process, we can’t promise that we can vanquish your pre-interview nerves. What we can promise is to provide you with the information and advice you need to take you through the complete application process, from creating a CV to attracting the attention of the most scrupulous recruiter. We’ll also take you step by step through the interview itself, through to post-interview follow-up and how to deal with salary negotiation and the dreaded counter-offer.

    What are you waiting for?

FIRST THINGS FIRST – THE CV

In the majority of cases, the key to progressing through the application stage is the crafting of a relevant CV that demonstrates your skills and qualifications and convinces the recruiter that you should be given the opportunity to discuss the job you are pursuing.

Contrary to what some would have you believe, the CV is not dead; it is thriving and evolving in today’s online world. While gimmicks such as QR codes and video CVs may be appropriate in creative world of PR and marketing, most employers and recruiters will without exception request a copy of your CV sometime during the recruitment process.

Even an online application is basically a rehashing of your CV but with so many conflicting guidelines, what are the rules and regulations for the perfect CV?

Our guide below will provide you with the information you need to create a CV that reflects your experience, your qualifications and ultimately give you the optimum chance of securing an interview.

    Preparing Your CV

Once you’ve identified your ideal role or decided which position you are going to apply for, the next step is building your CV in support of your application.

Your CV is a summary of your highlights and achievements that gives the employer a flavour of what you can do for them.

Imagine yourself as a product to be sold to an organisation. Employers are generally looking for the top talent, the candidates that can make a difference to their company, whether through increased profit margins and market share or improved innovation. Their aim is to locate the candidates who will help them to achieve those goals.

    Putting Your CV In Perspective

Before we begin to look at the CV, have you ever considered why your countless applications are often met by a wall of silence from an employer?

The following facts may cast some light onto the situation:-

It is estimated that on receipt of a CV, HR Managers or recruitment consultants spend a maximum of twenty seconds glancing through it to assess a candidate’s suitability. You therefore have just twenty seconds to make the impact you need to be considered as a candidate for a position – and that doesn’t mean an interview is guaranteed.

The majority of employers are beginning to use ‘applicant tracking’ software to save time in the recruitment process. In other words, in many cases, your CV will be processed through a computer system which will search for pre-programmed keywords. If you don’t have the requisite number of keywords, your application will be left to fester in the recesses of the recruitment database. In the case of recruitment agencies, it is possible your CV will never reach the desk of an actual human being.

Some quite startling statistics suggest that only between one and two in one hundred applications actually make it through to the interview process.

So how do you ensure that your application has the maximum chance of overcoming that first hurdle?

The Golden Rules of CV Preparation

Avoid The ‘One Size Fits All’ CV

Taking the above into consideration, crafting an individually tailored CV for each application becomes increasingly important. Regardless of the presence of ‘applicant tracking’ software, recruiters and employers will differentiate between those candidates who take the time to prepare the CV and those who submit a hastily ‘cut and paste’ job application. This is time consuming if you are applying for several roles but the job market is generally saturated at present and employers will only seriously consider those who stand out from the crowd.

    No Jargon

Stand alone phrases such as ‘well organised’, or ‘excellent communication skills’ should be avoided where possible; they are general phrases used by the majority of candidates. If you use them, your CV should support your claims of why your communication skills are excellent, such as, an outstanding track record in sales.

No More Than Two Pages of A4

Occasionally, some CVs will require additional detail but in general, your CV should be limited to two sides of A4, presented in Times New Roman or Arial font. This will also encourage you to avoid meandering job descriptions and help you to focus on presenting only salient facts, which is what the employers are interested in.

    Avoid Elaborate Font and Boxes

Well presented CVs do not require the additional distraction of elaborate fonts or decorative boxes; in addition, these non-standard fonts will probably guarantee that your application is automatically rejected when it comes to the ubiquitous applicant tracking machines which will not be able to read them.

    Achievements Matter

Coming back to those first twenty seconds, your achievements should be immediately obvious within those first twenty seconds of the recruiter or employer reading the CV.

The aim is to ensure you reach the interview stage.

    The Layout Of Your CV

For optimum results, follow the tips below in your CV preparation:-

    Contact Details

Contact details should be provided at the top of each page of your CV, including a personal e-mail address (recruiters and hiring managers are reluctant to contact candidates on a work e-mail address for confidentiality reasons) and the telephone numbers that are the easiest to contact you on. If you have a LinkedIn profile
