Water Sings Blue: Ocean Poems by Kate Coombs, illustrated by Meilo So Such an adorable collection! It's made for kids, so the poems are mostly short and all cute, as are the accompanying illustrations.I love the ocean, so I really had to pick this up when I saw it.
It's the size of a typical picture book at just 32 pages. The poems felt a little stacked all over each other, but that could have been more the fault of my reader (read in browser from the library) than the book itself. I'd definitely read it again with my son when he's ready for a bit more poetry. As it is we're working through some classics first.

Most of the poems are nice, fun, and pretty. After growing up in Maine near the ocean I can appreciate the art and descriptions. But, some of them are ridiculously short and silly. For me, the sudden prayer and mention of the lord was off-putting. I would have much preferred this book if it went all in; not just put words together because they relate to the ocean and its creatures. Water Sings Blue was nice, but could have been so much better for me if there was a theme of learning and usefulness (there were a couple of those types of poems), rather than incredibly short rhymes.
I like that there are different types of poems in the book, with different rhyme schemes and meters. Some of the poems have couplets or ABAB rhymes, and there was even a haiku. I liked having a variety of poetry to read rather than the same form for each one. The watercolor illustrations have a sense of tranquility that correlates with the calm waters of the ocean. Bright vibrant colors represent the creatures living in the water, expressing their beauty and adding mystery to a part of the world we cannot see every day. The book covers every aspect of the beach and water. The poems also provide a different perspective of topics like the sand, shipwrecks, and seashells. The sand is represented as the ruins of history, shipwrecks are the bones of trees, and seashells are real estate for sea creatures. The book was a beautiful portrayal of the ocean and everything that goes along with it.
Loved the playful language and the gorgeous illustrations. Some would be great read-alouds, or read-alone for grade 2 and up.
