II. STARTING AND STOPPING THE ENGINE
Before starting the engine, the novice driver must check if it’s prepared for starting and functioning. To this purpose, he firstly checks if in there is water in the radiator (in the case of air cooling automobiles, this check is unnecessary). The existence of water in the radiator is established by opening the radiator filler plug. The existence and quantity of the tank fuel is checked with the fuel level indicator of the dashboard (or with a specially graded ruler). Also, the existence and the level of the oil in the engine crankcase must be checked, which is made with the aid of the gauge rod (oil gauge/dipstick).
After checking all these and establishing that they are satisfying, we also check if the gear lever is in neutral (and if not, we bring it in neutral) and if the accumulator is charged (this is indicated by the intensity of the horn –if in the starting place honking is permitted- or the intensity of the lights after connecting the ignition and lights). The strangler (bumpkin) is fixated in the closed position by pulling out its button or clack valve, if the engine is cold, and if the engine is heated, the strangler will no longer be closed. After connecting the ignition (by wriggling the ignition key), we start the engine (by whirling the crankshaft) with the aid of the starter or hand crank (when the automobile is provided with a crank). In order to facilitate the starting of the engine it is better to first press the clutch pedal (so it would disengage), so that, at starting, the crankshaft or the pinions of the gearbox won’t revolve. These, especially when the oil is viscous due to cold, make a stand against the revolving of the engine crankshaft. The starter mustn’t be connected more than 4-5 seconds, or the storage battery can discharge, and its lamellae could contort. Between two consecutive couplings of the starter, a pause of approximately 10-12 seconds must be made. Beginner drivers often make the following mistakes: after connecting the starter, they release it before the engine even started, or continue to keep it in gear even after the engine has started. That is why it’s recommended to come into notice on these mistakes, so they could be avoided. If after 3-4 attempts of starting the engine with the aid of the starter we have no results, we will attempt to start it with the crank (if it exists). Generally, in cold weather, it’s recommended to use as often as possible the crank starting, as it contributes to the maintaining in good state of the battery and of the starter. The starting crank must be kept in such a manner so that all the fingers will be on one part of it. Otherwise (at the grip of the bail with the fingers) by reason of some eventual backfires of the engine, we can injure our hand.
The employment of the crank for the circumvolution of the bent axle is made overhand, lugging it so as to obtain half a rotation. It is recommended that before starting the engine with the crank, the beginner driver to do a few exercises of hand gripping and gyration of the crank, at first without
