    Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that's where the sisters' similarities end.               Without going into the actual story, The Lies We Told has good developed characters. Feeling a connection to characters is the key to wanting to read a book. I will be honest. I almost gave up on this book. The first half was slow. However, I am glad I stuck it out. The last third had me glued to the pages. Would have rated it a four had the beginning not been such a long read.

      This is another wonderfully crafted story by a very gifted author. It is amazing the way Chamberlain uses the twists and turns at just the right places. This is the story of sisters Rebecca and Maya Ward. The story tells of the challenges and bonds that unite these sisters from the time they lose their parents in a horrible double murder to the nightmare they endure as medical people working for a relief effort after a hurricane in North Carolina. Each sister keeps many truths to herself and when one sister is missing these lies seem to surface to make the girls doubt their feelings and love for the other. This is truly a must read especially for fans of Diane Chamberlain.

      I enjoyed this book until the epilogue. Before that I would have rated it with 4 stars, however, after reading the epilogue I was so disappointed...come on, could it be?

      Very good story of 2 sisters whose parents are murdered when they are young, and the paths as doctors that they take, culminating in the lose of one and the temptation of the other.

Even though there are 371 pages, I found it to be a quick read because I had to keep reading at a fast pace to keep up with the fast pace of the storyline. The characters came to life, to the point that I was disappointed the story ended because I wanted to continue following their lives, especially with the surprise ending. I could actually feel the emotions, especially of the 2 sisters, Maya and Rebecca. The portrayal of how they both handled the trauma of their parents' murders differently , which they both felt guilty for but never discussed, molded and affected them as adults was compelling. Reading the written detailed graphic account of the disaster following a hurricane was so vivid, that it felt like I was watching a movie. I really enjoyed the medical aspect of the plot being a retired RN. This was the first time I read a book written by Diane Chamberlain and I will definitely be reading her prior books. Would I recommend this book? Absolutely!! My Rating: 5

      I think that if I were titling this book, it would be called The Lies We Never Told. The story is very much based on things left unsaid, rather than lies told. Two sisters, Rebecca and Maya Ward suffered a family tragedy early in their lives. Rebecca was eighteen and Maya just fourteen when their parents were murdered. Each of the sisters felt that she was to blame for the murders. Each of them was right, each wrong. Despite what happened to their family, these two grew into apparently happy and successful individuals. They both excelled in school and became doctors. They both lost themselves in education to avoid facing their losses and themselves. Also, despite having similar experiences and education, these two women seemed to be very different. Rebecca, being the elder of the sisters took on a protective role. She put her own schooling n hold in order to raise her sister after the deaths of their parents. No one could deny her selflessness and generosity. Maya fell into the role of the protected sister, always feeling the need to lean on someone. She was clearly the less storn of the two, or so it seemed. Rebecca worked with a disaster relief organization that took her to all corners of the world, always in the very worst of circumstances. Maya had an amiable and loving husband, himself a doctor, and was interested in starting a family. This did not stop the sisters from being close and loving. Nor did the secrets and "lies" that lay between them. It was appropriately enough a hurricane that stepped up and blew through life as these women knew it, and the aftereffects that would whirl them towards a much different life than the one which they had been living. A question through much of the book was how to go on when someone you love is ripped from your life, just gone. This is the story about how these three doctors, this family wound up after the storm. Good ending.. one full star added for that! It made enduring the slow and frustrating spots worth the effort.

      This was an enjoyable read from start to finish.Sisters Maya and Rebecca couldn't be more different. Maya longs to be a mom, and Rebecca is totally career-oriented. Both are medical doctors. Maya is married to Adam, also a medical doctor. Rebecca is single, and plans to stay that way....until a horrible turn of events changes her life and the lives of many others in a drastic way. Maya is the shy, timid type character who is safely ensconced in her role as a pediatrician. When she is called upon to help out in a disaster relief effort after 2 hurricanes, she is put to the test. Her husband and sister are already there helping out, and Maya doesn't want to disappoint them. This turn of events changes Maya's life in ways that she could never imagine.I found myself cheering Maya on to take steps that were totally out of character for her. She was able to find an inner strength that she never even knew that she possesed. Her sister Rebecca kind of rubbed me the wrong way....her character being very out-spoken and bossy. I had no idea how this story was going to play out, and I was very pleasantly surprised at the end. This is the first of Diane Chamberlain's books that I have read. Now I am eager to get my hands on her other books. I have already ordered 3 others.....The Secret Life of Cee Cee Wilkes, Secrets She Left Behind and Summer's Child. I can't wait to read them. I highly recommend The Lies We Told.....a riveting and rewarding story of loss, love and finding out what is most important in life.

      Somehow or another, until very recently, Diane Chamberlain's books have not been on my radar. I'm trying to rectify this as quickly as the library and my bank account will allow.Rebecca and Maya are sisters, both physicians. Maya, timid and easily frightened, is a pediatric orthopedist, quietly going about the business of healing bones in children. She and her anesthesiologist husband Adam, are trying heartbreakingly unsuccessfully to start a family. By contrast. Rebecca is a physician with a nonprofit organization that send doctors to the site of natural disasters. She vociferously rejects the idea of settling down, until Maya's most recent miscarriage awakens an unexpected desire for her own child. They both hold secrets, dating back to the time of their parents' murders some years ago. Both feel responsible for the action of the killer, and each feels as if her sister knows her secret, it will shatter their relationship.When double hurricanes hit near their North Carolina town, Rebecca heads straight for the disaster zone to help out. Accompanying her is Adam, Maya's husband. In scenes that evoke the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, they quickly find themselves overwhelmed, and Adam sends out a call to Maya to join them. Maya, fearful in chaotic situations since their parents' deaths, doesn't want to go, but does so out of loyalty and guilt towards Adam. Once there, she enters the exhausting fray of the the work they are doing. When sending a critically ill child on a helicopter to a nearby hospital, Maya finds herself forced to ride along.Soon Adam and Rebecca hear of a crash of a transport helicopter, and learn it is Maya's. What follows is the story of how Adam and Rebecca face the presumed loss of Maya, and Maya's desperate attempts to return home to her family.While I was a skosh unhappy with the ending, I can find no other fault in this fabulous novel. Chamberlain, as in her other novels I've read, holds a fantastic, realistic touch with her characterizations and plotlines. The result is a mostly deeply satisfying work. On the cover of one of Chamberlain's other books I've read is the blurb that Chamberlain is the "Southern Jodi Picoult." All I can say about that is: Jodi Picoult WISHES. Well done and highly recommended.

      The Lies We Told is a really good book. It’s the story of two sisters, completely different yet close due to the murder of their parents when they were younger. Maya and Rebecca are both doctors, yet in totally different realms. Rebecca, the older sister, who took guardianship over Maya when there parents were murdered is a adventure seeking, independent person, who seems somewhat cold. She’s a doctor for DIDA, which is a non profit organization that goes around the world where they are needed when disasters happen. Maya is timid, and co-dependent, and constantly scared and works in safety of a hospital. Maya has been trying to have a baby with her husband Adam, and the wear and tear of concieving and losing babies is taking it’s toll on them, and their marriage. When a storm hits the U.S Coast both Rebecca and Adam leave with DIDA to help out. With the disaster area out of control, Adam calls Maya to come and help. Maya being afraid of anything outside the norm is hesitant to go, but knowing that going will make Adam happy she decides to go. While there Maya is sent on a helicopter to help the transporting of a patients that are seriously injured to a local hospital, when it crashes. Soon both Rebecca and Adam learn of the crash, and are devastated. After surviving the crash, Maya begins a journey of her own. She is stranded on an island with a couple that are backwoods. They prefer to live outside of the ongoing world, and prefer to be isolated. I really can’t say enough about this book. It kept me up all night reading, though I have to say the ending was unbelievable, but darn can Diane Chamberlain weave a story so mesmerizing that a bad ending takes nothing away from the story. Throughout the story we learn bits and pieces about what happened that night their parents were murdered, slowly everything starts coming out. This was a really interesting part in the The Lies We Told, because the book starts off with the murder of their parents in a prologue. From the beginning we know the secrets will revolve around the murder.
