    The New Arrival

The new arrival was nameless; unfinished and left alone in a corner to fend for himself. The page's background was white, but he found he shared it with some other drawings. They came over to have a closer look at him once the Creator had gone. He thought the other drawings looked scary, so he curled himself into a ball in an attempt to hide from them.

'This one isn't finished either,' said a large purple elephant to the others. 'I guess he's supposed to be a man.' The elephant tentatively prodded the new arrival a few times with his trunk and then shrugged. 'Seems harmless enough.'

'He's really thin, has big ears and isn't coloured in,' said a grumpy looking grey cloud with contempt in his voice. 'I don't think he'll amount to much.'

The new arrival hoped this prediction wouldn't turn out to be true, and tried to act as if the cruel comment hadn't hurt him.

'You poor soul,' said a friendly voice. 'Ignore Mr Cloud, he's always being negative.'

The new arrival looked up to see who'd spoken with such tenderness, and spotted a tiny grey-brown wren sitting on the elephant's back.

'Don't worry, we're not going to hurt you,' she said gently. 'My name's Birdie and I'm sorry we've crowded your space like this. We didn't expect a new arrival and we're wondering why you're here.'

The new arrival was about to say he didn't know why, but then heard a loud voice shouting from behind the other drawings.

'Move aside you louts! I can't see the new guy!'

The drawings started to move out of the way, and the new arrival saw a strange figure make his way toward him. Like himself, this drawing wasn't finished, had rough features and resembled a man in appearance. The drawing's head was pear-shaped, like his body, and he had very tiny ears, but they weren't the first things that stood out. The drawing had two noses. One of them was facing to the left, and slightly above it was another nose facing the right. The loud drawing wore big boots, tight fitting pants, a belt and a long sleeved shirt. Above his sleepy-looking eyes, his long hair was spiked and brushed to the side.

The new arrival was wondering why the stranger had two noses when the elephant tapped the loud cartoon on the shoulder with his trunk.

'Sketch, where have you been?' he asked.

'Hi, Stomper. I've just been for a stroll to the top of the page,' he replied, with a look like he had something to hide.

Stomper frowned. 'You've been to the other side, haven't you? You know you're not supposed to go there! It's dangerous!'

'How would you know? You haven't even been there!' Sketch growled.

Stomper looked uneasy. 'I knew three drawings that went to the other side and they never came back,' he said gravely.

'That's understandable,' Sketch replied, smiling cheekily. 'They probably left to get away from you pestering them.'

The new arrival wondered what they were arguing about, but was too afraid to ask - he thought he might get yelled at.

'You aren't taking this issue seriously!' shouted Stomper, stomping his two front feet in anger and causing the ground to shake.

'Don't worry, nobody saw me there,' said Sketch. He was looking bored and soon changed the subject. 'Let me have a closer look at the new guy.'

Sketch walked over to the new arrival and looked him up and down. The new arrival had a long narrow face, big round eyes and an even bigger nose. He had bushy eyebrows above and below his eyes, and three sets of ears sticking out in layers, unevenly, on each side of his face. His hair was short and spiked, and he was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and big gumboots that didn't look like they fit.

'Hey Sketch, he's unfinished like you, except he's thin, a lot taller and not as...um...wide,' said an orange goldfish, who was wearing a blue swimming cap and goggles. The goldfish didn't seem to be able to stop swimming around in circles.

Sketch glared at the fish then stood over him menacingly. 'You saying I'm fat, Bubbles?'

Bubbles slowed down and trembled. 'No, of course not.'

    'Good!'

'I didn't think the Creator would give us another drawing,' said Stomper, gazing up at the sky with a confused expression. 'This place is already full.'

'Well, we could move to the other side,' said Sketch, turning to the elephant and showing another cheeky smile. 'There's more room there.'

The new arrival got the impression that Sketch liked teasing the elephant.

'I've already told you, we're not moving!' Stomper yelled. 'We'll stay here and make do!'

Stomper stormed off and Birdie flew down and frowned at Sketch. 'You shouldn't make Stomper angry. Bubbles, can you go and see if you can calm him down?'

The goldfish nodded and followed Stomper. Sketch turned to the new arrival and smiled. 'I'm Sketch,' he said and shook the drawing's hand rather vigorously.

'I'm possibly a drawing,' said the new arrival, as he struggled to break free from Sketch's handshake.

'Of course you are, but what's your name?'

The new arrival had gained some knowledge of other drawings, but he was surprised he didn't know anything about himself. 'I'm not sure.'

Sketch looked annoyed and let go of the new arrival's hand. 'The Creator should have given you one.'

'Who's the Creator? Was it his giant hand that vanished into the sky?' The new arrival figured the giant hand must be responsible for creating him. He'd seen the hand when he had first opened his eyes and was quite frightened by it and the long pointy object it was holding, but the hand had quickly disappeared.

'You'll learn more about the Creator in time,' said Sketch. 'The most important thing for us to discuss now is what your name should be. As I said before, the Creator should have given you one, but it looks like he's abandoned you I'm afraid.'

'I'm abandoned?' said the new arrival, sounding very anxious.

'It looks that way, but don't worry.' Sketch gave the new arrival an encouraging pat on the back. 'I'll look out for you; I've been abandoned as well.'

The new arrival still felt anxious, but did feel a bit better knowing he wasn't the only drawing that had problems.

'Now, what should your name be?' said Sketch. He studied the new arrival intently while he thought on it.

The new arrival felt very uncomfortable being stared at and began to fidget.

Finally Sketch said, 'I think Doodle suits you, seeing as you look like a doodle. What do the rest of you think?'

Most said they liked the name, except for Mr Cloud, who only liked to complain. The new arrival opened his mouth to offer his opinion on what his name should be, but Sketch said, 'Great, it's decided. Doodle it is.'

Birdie congratulated the new arrival on getting a name and the drawings began to clap. Doodle didn't have the heart to tell them he hated his new name.

'Now that you've got a name, let me show you around the place,' said Sketch.

The pair began to walk around the page, but there wasn't much to look at.

'Over here on my left we have lots of white space,' said Sketch, enthusiastically. 'And over here on my right we have even more white space. Great, isn't it?'

Doodle wasn't sure if he was joking. 'Don't you get sick of it?'

Sketch nodded. 'Sometimes. I'd like it if there was a background of some sort, but we try and make the most of our surroundings and have fun. All it takes is a little imagination.'

    'What do you mean?'

    'I'll show you.'

Sketch jumped into the air, and to Doodle's surprise, started moving around above him.

'There's no gravity here, so we can float about if we want to,' he said. 'You can't usually do that if there's a background.'

Doodle jumped into the air and began to flap his arms like a bird. 'I'm flying,' he said, although most wouldn't call it that because he seemed to be having trouble moving in a straight line. Birdie flew next to Doodle and tried to give him a few tips on how to fly properly.

'You're both being silly,' Mr Cloud told them. 'I'm leaving,' he said, grumbling to himself as he went.

After Doodle and Sketch had finished flying, they sailed to the bottom of the page and found Bubbles the goldfish waiting to greet them.

Bubbles said hello to Sketch and then turned to Doodle. 'I didn't get a chance to introduce myself,' he said, talking so fast the words ran into each other as he swam around in circles. 'I'm Bubbles. It's nice to meet you.'

'I'm Doodle. What do you do here, Bubbles?'

'Well, I mostly just swim around in circles,' he said. He seemed a bit disappointed that Doodle didn't comment on how amazing that was.

Instead, Doodle looked puzzled, and Sketch wondered what he was thinking about.

'I thought fish needed to be in water to survive?' said Doodle finally.

'You're right, they do!' yelled Bubbles, and he began thrashing around the
