    Chapter One: Introduction

    Years of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks was first published in 2001. The subtitle of the novel is The Novel of the Plague.

    It is said to be one of the internationally bestselling historical novel. The book received huge acclaim and admiration from both critics and reviewers. Most of the reviews were highly positive.

    The New York Times and Washington Post chose Years of Wonders as a Notable Book.

    As the subtitle of the novel suggests, the story is about the plague, but at the same time it provides a highly striking insight into the treatment which the women received during the 17th century.

    Chapter Two: Introduction to Plot

    Anna Frith’s is the main presenter of the story. The novel is written from her point of view. She happens to be a housemaid.

    She describes in detail the events and the life she lives through the period the plague attacks her village.

    The story is based on the history of a small village called Eyam in Derbyshire. The village was attacked by the plague in the year 1666. The village quarantined itself to stop the spread of the disease further.

    Anna Frith works for the town minister, Michael Mompellion, and his wife. One day a boarder brings the plague with him from London. The plague quickly spreads to family across the village.

    The minister takes an immediate decision to quarantine the village so that the spread of the plague could be stopped. He wants to keep other towns safe.

    On one hand, more and more neighbors continue to die, Anna and Elinor Mompellion find is more difficult to keep up their spirits.

    Owing to the deadly effect of the disease, many people lose their faith and accept superstitious means to save themselves and to cure themselves from the disease.

    Chapter Three: Plot Overview

    The story begins in 1665 in spring season. Anna Frith happens to be a young widow. She works for the Rector and his wife. One day, George Remington Viccars arrives as a boarder in the house. He is a tailor.

    When a box of fabrics comes from London, the tailor catches high fever. The symptoms of the bubonic plague are diagnosed. The tailor tells Anna to burn all the cloth has brought with from London. He actually wants to prevent
