    Credits

    Loss

    Lilian Cohen

High above the plunging falls and deep ravines

among the boulders laced with whispers

    I sense their age-old presence,

they that once read every seed and twig

and wove each tweak of nature

    into the sacred Dreaming lore

    that flowed through them

    into their lands.

    Today I see them

drifting dark in white man’s towns

like Dreamtime birds lost in flight

trapped inside the white man’s nets.

I pass them huddled on the grass

    bleeding for their severed past

clinging still to filaments of Dreaming.

    I see them

and cannot meet their shuttered eyes.
