About this ebook
George Glamack was exceptional for becoming a talented athlete despite having a significant handicap. He sustained an eye injury while playing football as a youth. This resulted in farsightedness that actually prevented him from seeing the basketball goal at close range. Nevertheless he developed his game skillfully so that he led all scorers by the time he was a senior in high school in Allentown, Pennsylvania. At the University of North Carolina Glamack was an All America in both his junior and senior seasons, 1940 and 1941. He captured the Helms Athletic Award as a senior. The honor recognized him as the outstanding basketball player among all colleges in the United States. After a stint with the College All Stars in 1941, Glamack entered the U.S. Navy. He joined the Rochester Royals of the NBL soon after his discharge in November 1946.

George Gregory Glamack (June 7, 1919-March 10, 1987) was originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He played Prep School basketball in Allentown, PA. George led all players in the eastern United States in scoring while he was in high school.
At the University of North Carolina he was an All American in the 1939-1940 and 1940-1941 basketball seasons. He broke all records at UNC, scoring 1,336 points. This included a stellar performance against Clemson, a game in which the Carolina center scored 45 points. Glamack was 6’5" and weighed 215. Farsighted, George wore glasses away from the basketball court. The 45 points versus Clemson stood as a record until it was tied by Tar Heel Lenny Rosenbluth.
Rosenbluth’s feat also came against the ClemsonTigers. The date was January 14, 1956. Sam Ranzino of North Carolina State broke the 45-point barrier against Virginia Tech, in New York City, on January 23, 1951. Glamack’s Southern Conference mark stood for ten years.
During the 1939-1940 college basketball season Glamack led the Tar Heels to a Southern Conference title. He was Carolina’s leading scorer, averaging 17 points per game. His best points total for 18 regular season games at North Carolina was 426. He added 26 more in three collegiate playoff games. George also scored 90 points in five preseason practice games at UNC.

Glamack frequently hit hook shots from far out at Carolina. However, he often missed short set-ups, near the basket, because of his nearsightedness. Entering his final
