Chapter One: Introduction
Johnny Tremain
by Esther Forbes was first published in 1943. It is a coming-of-age story.
This children’s fiction historical novel describes the life in Boston before and during the American Revolution.

was awarded the Newbery Medal in the year 1944. It was declared the bestselling children’s book as of the year 2000 in America.
It was also adapted into a film by Walt Disney Pictures in the year 1957.
The story describes how the lives of the young Americans were highly influenced by the political strife during the Revolutionary War and the Second World War.
It was a strong hope of the author that his book would definitely inspire the young people to try to be as patriotic and self-sacrificing as Johnny Tremain becomes when the book comes to its conclusion.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
The story opens in the silversmith shop of Ephraim Lapham, in Boston, Massachusetts. Johnny Tremain, the title character and the protagonist of the novel, works there as an apprentice. He is a very promising and talented person.
One day, a very rich merchant John Hancock places a very challenging order with the Lapham shop. Johnny starts working on the order, but while preparing the order his hand is badly burned.
Dove another apprentice happens to have given Johnny a cracked crucible that begins to leak when molten silver is poured into it. The hot molten silver badly burns the hand and Johnny’s hand is crippled beyond use. It is now obvious that Johnny can no longer be a silversmith.
Later in the story it transpires that Johnny’s injury is not so serious and his hand can be brought back to functioning condition after a minor surgery.
Johnny tries to find work at several places but he is always rejected. After several rejections, one day he meets Mr. Lyte who happens to be a successful businessman. Johnny informs Mr. Lyte that his mother has told him that Johnny and Mr. Lyte were related.
Lyte asks for proof of that relation. Johnny shows Mr. Lyte a silver cup with the Lyte family’s coat of arms on it. Lyte declares that the silver cup had been stolen from him. Johnny is accused of stealing the silver cup and consequently he is arrested.
The court eventually frees Johnny. Having been released from the prison, Johnny finds a job with a newspaper The Boston Observer.
It transpires that The Observer
is a Whig Publication. While working there, Johnny gets introduced to the larger world of pre-revolutionary Boston politics.
With the passing months, the tension between Whigs and Tories continue to increase. Johnny is highly inspired by his party and he also becomes a dedicated Whig himself.
With the passage of time, Johnny matures and develops several personal relationships. He develops his relationship with Cilla who proves
