    Chapter One

    Spirit Guide

I stand here at the bottom of your bed waiting for you. Sometimes you glimpse me out of the corner of your eye or sense that I am here. I am patient, as I wait for you to take my hand and let me guide you to the afterlife. You are not the only one I wait for, there are many others but at this moment in time you are the most important person to me.

People call me the Shadow; the Angel of Death or the Grim Reaper. The truth is I don’t know what or who I am. All that I know is that I take the spirits of those passed over and guide them to the light. I call myself The Spirit Guide. I mean no harm and I do no harm. I am not the reason for your death. I am not religious. I do not know if there is a God or a Heaven. I do not know what the white light is or what happens when you pass through the light. I am just your guide.

Was I once a human being, just like you? Did I once die like you? What made me the way I am? No-one can tell me, as only the dead or dying know I exist. Only they can see me. I love our conversations. They are highlight of my day. The stories you tell me about your life and your death.

But they stop so suddenly when the light appears and I have to guide you to it. You then disappear forever never to return. You ask me questions. Is it heaven? Are you an angel? Did you die once like me? Questions I cannot answer. Questions that I have often asked myself throughout the years.

As far back as I can remember I have been a spirit guide. How it started I do not know. Did I do anything before this, I do not remember? Do I have a name? I do not know. The dying say I am the man with the dark hair; the man with the long black coat; the young man at the foot of the bed. I have to take your word for it as I cannot see my reflection and I do not know what I look like. All I know is that you are the reason I exist; you are why I continue to exist.

I ‘work’, for a better word, at The Western Infirmary hospital situated in the West End of Glasgow, Scotland which was opened in 1874. In the beginning, there were only just over 100 beds but throughout the years the number of beds increased dramatically and so did the number of spirits that I guided to the light.

How many spirits have I helped? I cannot answer that but can merely say too many to count. What about those spirits who point blank refuse to walk into the light? I can answer that question. They still exist to this day and can be found wandering the hospital corridors lost and confused.

Ghosts they are called, by those who have seen them. Can I help them? NO. Their light has gone forever and will never return. You only get one chance to walk into the light. Those poor spirits would not listen to me. For some reason,
